MCMINVILLE, Ore. – The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind and eliminate Hendrix, 5-3, on Friday at the 2009 NCAA West Baseball Regional at Jim Wright Stadium in McMinville.

Baseball America previews Division 2 and Division 3

Baseball America has put together previews of Division 2 and Division 3. They have Tampa as the best team in the country for Division 2. The Spartans are seeking their third title in the last four years. UC San Diego is listed as the second best team while Mount Olive who was the 2008 Division 2 champion are ranked third by Baseball America. Central Missouri and Florida Southern round out the Top 5. Baseball America has put Robbie Shields of Florida Southern as the top position player while Mike Adams of Franklin Pierce is the top pitcher. Continue reading

The SUNY Cortland baseball team is ranked first nationally in Division III for the 2009 season in two preseason polls – one conducted by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the other by the Web site D3baseball.com.

Cortland finished 42-5 last season, including a school-record 38-game winning streak. The Red Dragons made their ninth NCAA Division III World Series appearance, all since 1995, and finished tied for seventh nationally. Cortland’s string of 16 consecutive NCAA Division III tournament berths is the longest active streak nationally.

2008 NCAA DIV III West Region Recap Day 3

ABILENE, Texas – Mike Vass drove in five runs and Kurt Yacko shut the door
in relief for the third straight day as Chapman won a slugfest with Trinity
Friday at Walt Driggers Field. The win puts Chapman in position to play for
the NCAA Division III West Region Baseball title Saturday, which would be
the program¹s fourth straight.

Vass knocked in a 3-run home run in the third, which was part of a 5-run
inning for the Panthers. The Tigers 3-1 before Chapman took a 6-3 lead,
however, Trinity struck back with four runs in the bottom of third
highlighted by Dylan Early¹s fourth homer of the tournament, a 3-run shot
off Jordan Sigman and the Tigers re-gained the lead 7-6.

2008 NCAA Division III West Region Championships Day Two games 5 &6


ABILENE, Texas – All-American Kurt Yacko and Patrick O¹Hail helped the No.
1-ranked Chapman Panthers end McMurry¹s season and a run for a West Region
title. Yacko struck out six and didn¹t allow a hit in the final 3.2 innings
in relief and O¹Hail hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th
inning to give the Panthers a 5-3 win Thursday at Walt Driggers Field.

McMurry led 3-0 to open the game in the top of the second inning. Then,
Chapman scored a run in the second, third and sixth innings to knot the
score at three. However, no run crossed the plate until the bottom of the
12th with two outs when Jake Hurst and O¹Hail scored on O¹Hail¹s opposite
field homer to end the game.

NCAA Division III West Region Baseball Championships recap of game 1


ABILENE, Texas – The No. 1 ranked Chapman Panthers used a 3-run first inning and never looked back on the way to a narrow 4-3 win over La Verne in the first game of the 2008 NCAA West Region Baseball Championships at Walt Driggers Field. Patrick O’Hail hit a 2-run single in the first and Wayde Kitchens & Kurt Yacko combined for the win and save respectively. Continue reading

Six Teams to compete in NCAA III West Region Baseball Tournament.


McMurry University, the pre-determined site for the 2008 NCAA Division III
West Region Baseball Championships, was awarded a six-team tournament field
late Sunday night. The tournament will feature the No. 1 team in the nation
in Chapman University along with California State University-East Bay,
George Fox University, La Verne University, the hosts McMurry University,
and Trinity University.

All six teams are representatives of the west region, but a seventh west
region team, Linfield (Ore.), was shipped to the Central Region Tournament
site in Rock Island, Ill. The double elimination tournament begins Wednesday
at Noon.
