LITTLE ROCK - A two-out rally in the top of the third helped the Silver Team claim a 4-3 win in the opener of the UALR Fall World Series Tuesday evening at Gary Hogan Field. Baseball America has released their 2011-2012 Recruiting Class rankings for the class that will be eligible for the start of the 2012 season. Leading the pack is the Vanderbilt Commodores which got a first round pick in Tyler Beede among other talented players to Nashville. The rest of the top five is filled out by Texas, Southern Miss, NC State, and Ole Miss.

Several key series unfolded this weekend as Conference USA finished up its second to last weekend of conference play this season. Houston stole two from visiting Southern Miss, leaving the Golden Eagles with just a one-game lead in the conference standings at a 15-6 record. Right behind them is Rice, who, with their series victory over visiting Memphis, improved to 14-7 in conference play. UCF solidified their spot in the Conference USA tournament, jumping up to a tie for fifth place after sweeping UAB in Birmingham over the weekend. Tied with UCF (as well as with Memphis) is Tulane, who were able to scrape together two wins in West Virginia, as they played an unconventionally scheduled three game set against Marshall. ECU absolutely destroyed visiting Delaware State, taking all three from the MEAC team by an average margin of just over eleven runs per game. Read the rest of this entry »

With just two CUSA series left to play, the regular season championship has become a two-team race as #17 Southern Miss sits just two games ahead of #19 Rice for the lead in the conference standings. East Carolina is the only other team with an over-.500 record, as the Pirates 11-10 mark is good for third place. Houston falls into a fourth place tie with Memphis after dropping all three games to Rice at home last weekend. Nationally, Southern Miss jumps two spots to #17, their highest ranking all season, while Rice re-cracks the top 20 at #19 this week. Read the rest of this entry »
Collegiate Baseball has put out their 2010-2011 Top 40 Recruiting Classes. Leading the way is LSU with the San Diego Toreros coming in at the runners up spot. The Oregon Ducks come in at the third spot while CWS Finalist UCLA comes in at number four. Florida rounds out the top five with another strong class coming in. Central Florida head coach Terry Rooney is bringing in a strong freshman class this fall with six out of eleven recruits selected in the 2010 MLB Draft. Coach Rooney is impressed by the strong class stating:
The LSU pitching staff has been hammered with injuries, transfers, and players signing with MLB teams. The Tigers have lost three pitchers to Tommy John surgery this summer with Jordan Rittiner and Joey Bourgeois will miss next season after undergoing Tommy John surgery this summer. There is an outside chance Left-hander Chris Garrett will be back in April according to a Paul Mainieri in a report from The Times-Picayune. (Link) Both LHP Chris Matulis and RHP Mitch Moorman have decided to transfer. Matulis will join former LSU assistant Terry Rooney at Central Florida while Mitch Moorman will head to Wichita State to play under legendary head coach Gene Stephenson.
The Cape Cod Baseball League hosted the 2010 All-Star Game at Fenway Park on Wednesday evening. The Western Division picked up a 5-0 victory over the East behind a strong pitching performance from the Western Division All-Stars. DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball announced Tuesday the names of the five finalists for the 2010 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award (GSA). This year will mark the 33rd consecutive year that the Golden Spikes Award will be presented to the nation’s premier amateur baseball player.
Chris Duffy, IF/OF, Central Florida; Yasmani Grandal, C, Miami (Fla.); Bryce Harper, C/IF/OF, Southern Nevada; Drew Pomeranz, LHP, Mississippi; and Chris Sale, LHP, Florida Gulf Coast round out the five finalists.
