SoCal Roundup: 1,000 For Gillespie

Mike Gillespie has seen just about everything this game has to offer after 20 years at USC and currently in his seventh season as the head man at UC Irvine. On Sunday, he saw something very familiar that got him to a new plateau. “Skip” reached a milestone, picking up his 1,000th career Division I victory.

While Gillespie saw his ‘Eaters win, they didn’t quite do it in the dramatic fashion that USC and Pepperdine pulled off to get sweeps against inferior foes. Big rubber matches between UCLA/Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton/San Francisco turned into dominant one-sided performances.

We’ve got your quick roundup of all the action, plus photo galleries from Northridge and the big series finale at UCLA: Continue reading

CBD Visit: Irvine Makes Three Early Runs Last

IRVINE, Calif. — UC Irvine wanted an insurance run.

Leading 3-2, the Anteaters got a leadoff walk from Grant Palmer to start the bottom of the seventh inning. Head coach Mike Gillespie had Chris Rabago sacrifice Palmer to second base to set up preseason All-Americans Taylor Sparks and Connor Spencer, who combined for 159 hits and 85 RBI in 55 games last season.

All Sparks or Spencer needed was to knock a base hit. But instead, Sparks racked up his seventh strikeout in four games and Spencer grounded out to end the inning — and continued the Sparks/Spencer First Hit Watch that is now a combined 31 at bats deep. Two All-Americans now 0-for-31.

SoCal Roundup: USC Upsets No. 2 Fullerton

Today was our first opportunity to see the Southern California teams face off with each other in mid-week action — something that makes the SoCal teams unique.

Rather than playing schools from directional schools or baby small conferences like might happen in other parts of the country, the SoCal coaches match up with each other, creating a great atmosphere and competition.

Unlike last season when Cal State Fullerton started the season 10-0, the Titans look vulnerable after a second sloppy game in four days cost Fullerton at USC.

Gallery: Famed Coach Rod Dedeaux Gets a Statue at USC

Rod Dedeaux would have been 100 years old on Monday. Unfortunately, the famous USC baseball coach died in January 2006 after complications from a stroke.

Otherwise, the architect of the college baseball’s most dominant program would still be calling everyone “Tiger” and still be everyone’s friend.

On Sunday, the University of Southern California honored Rod Dedeaux with a statue of the former Trojans’ skipper holding his arm up above his head with his hat held to the sky, forever tipping his cap to those that enter the gates at Dedeaux Field.

“I think it’s fitting that the first thing fans will see when they walk in is Rod Dedeaux,” current USC head coach Dan Hubbs said.

He was 0-for-5 Saturday when he came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the 11th inning. Continue reading
