SoCal Roundup: Frosh SS Web Gems

Both Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount have both been strong defensively and are among the top West Coast Conference teams, despite having to rely on a pair of freshmen shortstops.

But rather than being bothered by being thrust into the fire, Manny Jefferson and David Fletcher have thrived under the pressures of being regular starters for regional contenders just a season removed from high school ball. Both players made major contributions with the glove on Tuesday.

Inside the WCC: Lechich recovers from Saturday’s loss with a gem

PORTLAND, Ore. – Louie Lechich shrugged off a ninth-inning disaster on Saturday to lead San Diego to a West Coast Conference series victory over Portland on Sunday at Joe Ertz Field.

Lechich, in the game to close a 9-8 victory on Saturday, was one strike away from a save with no runners on. What followed was an NCAA-contender’s worst nightmare. Portland rallied for a 10-9 victory and the Pilots had an opportunity to win the series entering Sunday. Continue reading

SoCal Roundup: Suspended Due to Darkness

Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara matched up in a wacky contest that featured a Thomas Eshelman walk, a Joey Epperson strikeout, 18 runs and no resolution. There was a resolution at Dedeaux Field even though it took 13 innings.

Strahan Career-High Not Enough for USC Against Utah

The Utes struck out 17 times as a team and couldn’t muster a single hit for eighth consecutive innings, but somehow Utah (11-19, 2-11) was able to pull out a 3-2 victory over USC (15-17, 4-9) to open the series at Dedeaux Field Friday night. Continue reading

SoCal Roundup: Super Regional Rematch

When Cal State Fullerton and UCLA, the two premier Southern California programs in recent history, it’s always a good matchup, but there was a little extra motivation for Fullerton on Tuesday night as the Titans played the team that eliminated them from postseason play last year. Find out if the emotion and motivation proved to be enough.

USC took a ninth inning lead against Pepperdine but the Waves threatened to rally back in the bottom of the inning. Trailing San Diego State 4-2, UC Riverside also rallied in the ninth inning. See if either could complete the comeback.
