Purdue’s Wittgren and Plawecki looking to lead Boilermakers to NCAA Tourney

This year’s Boilermakers are off to an impressive start to the season, with a record of 12-1 so far, and are ranked in Baseball America’s Top 25 for the first time since 2001. This past weekend, Purdue had a 22-1 win over Murray State, breaking the school record with 30 hits in the game.

It’s been 25 years since Purdue last made the NCAA Tournament, and nearly 113 years since they last won a Big Ten Conference Title. But this year’s team is something special. Continue reading

Top 100 Countdown: 1. Mark Appel (Stanford)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We conclude the countdown today at number 1 with Stanford RHP Mark Appel. The San Ramon, California native attended Monte Vista High School. He was a two year letterwinner where as a senior he appeared in nine games with an ERA of 0.90 ERA in 31.0 innings. He gave up just 21 hits, striking out 45 and walking just six over five starts while going 4-0 with three saves. He was picked in the 15th round by the Detroit Tigers but decided to head to Stanford. Top 100 Countdown: 2. Mike Zunino (Florida)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 2 with Florida junior catcher Mike Zunino. The 6’2 220 pound backstop from Cape Coral, Florida attended Mariner High School playing under Steve Larsen. As a senior, he hit .464 with 43 hits, 37 RBI, 12 home runs and nine doubles while leading the team to the district title. He was selected by Oakland Athletics in the 30th round but decided to attend Florida. Continue reading

Top 100 Countdown: 3. Deven Marrero (Arizona State)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 3 with Arizona State junior shortstop Deven Marrero. The Davie, Florida native attended American Heritage High School where he was a two time captain. He was also named All-State and All-County in 2008, when American Heritage won both the Florida State title and the National title. He ended up being drafted in the 17th round (509th overall) by the Cincinnati Reds during the 2009 MLB Draft. He decided to turn down the Reds offer to head to Tempe, Arizona to play for the Arizona State Sun Devils. Continue reading

We continue the countdown today at number 4 with South Carolina senior LHP Michael Roth. The Greer, South Carolina native attended Riverside High School. He was a member of several teams including 2006 & 2008 South Carolina AAA All-State team, 2006 & 2007 Louisville Slugger High School All-American, 2006 South Carolina AAA Player of the Year, and a 2008 Rawlings Preseason third team All-American. We continue the countdown today at number 5 with Georgia Southern junior outfielder Victor Roache. The Ypsilanti, Michigan native attended Lincoln High School. He was a two time captain of the squad while being named All-Region and First Team All-State. He was selected in the 25th round by the Detroit Tigers in the 2009 MLB Draft but decided to attend Georgia Southern.  Continue reading

Top 100 Countdown: 6. Marcus Stroman (Duke)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 6 with Duke junior RHP Marcus Stroman. The Medford, New York native attended Patchogue-Medford High School where he was a four year letter winner. He went 9-1 as a senior with a 0.25 ERA and 120 strikeouts while hitting .350 with six homers and 22 stolen bases. His junior season saw him go 7-2 on the mound with a 1.20 ERA and 96 strikeouts while batting .410 with a pair of homers and 30 steals. He was named Louisville Slugger’s Player of the Year and earning the Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the state of New York. He also won the Paul Gibson Award, which goes to the top pitcher on Long Island. He was selected in the 18th round (532nd overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals but decided to head to Duke. Continue reading
