WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — In a polling of the Pac-12’s baseball coaches, defending Conference champion OREGON STATE has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the conference title again this season. The Cardinal received nine of 10 possible first-place votes and 98 points. Oregon State finished the 2013 campaign with a 52-12 record and advanced to the College World Series where they finished the year tied for third. The Beavers, led by preseason All-Americans Michael Conforto, Dylan Davis, Andrew Moore, Ben Wetzler and Scott Schultz, enter the season as a consensus top-5 team in the national rankings. Washington State at Oregon State
The final series of the Pac-12 for Oregon State and Washington State takes place at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. The Beavers hold a two game lead atop the conference with a three-game series against the Cougars left on the schedule. Washington State comes into the weekend with a 22-30 record. They are 8-19 in the Pac-12. The Cougars were swept by rival Washington last weekend, and then defeated Portland 1-0 during the midweek game. Oregon State, ranked No. 3 by the NCWBA, holds a 43-9 overall record. They are 22-5 in the Pac-12. The Beavers are coming off winning the series at Oregon last weekend. The Beavers and Ducks were also slated to play a midweek game, but it was cancelled due to the weather. With the win last weekend, the Beavers pretty much wrapped up a national seed and put themselves in perfect position to win the Pac-12.
Series Prediction: Oregon State sweeps Washington State.
Oregon State at Stanford
Oregon State traveled to Stanford over the weekend and delivered a knockout blow to the Cardinal’s chances of playing in the postseason. In game one on Friday, Oregon State defeated Stanford 7-3. The Beavers tagged Appel to the tune of five earned runs in five innings. Appel also had five walks. Beaver starter Matt Boyd picked up his 10th win of the year after pitching 6 and 1/3 innings of three-run ball. Right fielder Dylan Davis knocked in three RBI, while second baseman Andy Peterson had three hits to lead the Beavers.
Oregon State at Stanford
The series this weekend for Stanford has to be considered a must-win, if the Cardinal has any dreams about playing in the postseason. Stanford enters the weekend 26-17 overall and 11-10 in Pac-12 play. They are currently in fifth place in the Pac-12 and ranked No. 21 in the latest NCWBA poll. The Cardinal were able to take two out of three from Arizona State last weekend, but followed up the series with a midweek lost to San Francisco. The latest RPI ranking has Stanford sitting at 76, which means the Cardinal could really use a win over the Beavers. Oregon State, on the other hand, comes into the weekend ranked No. 5 in the NCWBA poll. They are 38-8 overall and 17-4 in the Pac-12. Winners of nine in a row, Oregon State swept California last weekend and beat Portland during their midweek game. California at Oregon State
The Beavers swept California over the weekend and have now won eight in a row. In game one on Friday night, Matt Boyd set a new career high with 12 strikeouts in the 6-1 Beaver victory. Boyd went 8 and 1/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits. The lefty is now 9-2 on the year. Designated hitter Ryan Barnes led the Beavers with three RBI. Continue reading
California at Oregon State
The Bears travel to Corvallis this weekend to take on the Beavers at Goss Stadium. California comes into the weekend 21-23 overall and 9-12 in the Pac-12. They are coming off a 13-2 victory against Pacific on Tuesday, and a series victory last weekend against Washington. Oregon State is 34-8 and 14-4 in the Pac-12. Ranked No. 5 in the latest NCWBA poll, the Beavers are coming off a series sweep last weekend against USC. Look for Oregon State to continue their winning ways, especially at home. USC at Oregon State
The Trojans travel to Goss Stadium in Corvallis this weekend to take on Oregon State. USC comes into the weekend 16-23 and 8-10 in the Pac-12. They took two out of three last weekend against Utah, in a series in which the Trojans rebounded from a shutout on Friday night. Oregon State had a disappointing series last weekend, in which the Beavers lost two out of three against Washington. The Beavers return home ranked No. 6 in the latest NCWBA poll. They are 31-8 and 11-4 in the Pac-12. Oregon State defeated Seattle University 4-3 in 14 innings on Monday. Look for Oregon State to rebound this weekend, as the Beavers are 14-3 overall and 5-1 in conference at Goss Stadium this season. Even with their hiccup in Washington last weekend, the Beavers still lead the Pac-12 with a 2.07 ERA. USC, on the other hand, ranks last in conference with a 4.80 ERA. Continue reading
Oregon State at Washington
The Beavers missed a golden opportunity this weekend to put some separation between them and the rest of the conference. The Washington Huskies were able to take two of out three from the Beavers this weekend after Friday’s game was postponed due to rain. In game one on Saturday, Jared Fisher picked up his first win of the season after pitching seven innings of no-run ball. Fisher only allowed five hits, while striking out two and walking one as Washington defeated Oregon State 5-1. It was a major win for Washington as the Husky bats got to Beaver starter Matt Boyd. Boyd allowed four runs, three earned, in six innings. Five different Huskies drove in an RBI, while designated hitter Michael Camporeale led the way for the Huskies with three hits. Oregon State at Washington
The Oregon State Beavers travel north this weekend to take on the Washington Huskies in a series that pits the first place Beavers against the last place Huskies. Oregon State arrives in Seattle ranked No. 6 in the latest NCWBA poll. The Beavers are 29-6 and 10-2 in conference play. They defeated Portland during a midweek matchup by a final of 5-1. The Beavers are also coming off a three-game sweep against Utah last weekend. The Washington Huskies enter the weekend with a 9-25 record. They are 3-9 in conference play. The Huskies dropped a midweek game to Seattle University by a final of 10-4. Washington also dropped the series against Stanford last weekend. This should be a series in which Oregon State adds to their conference wins record. The Beaver weekend starting staff is 5-1 with a 1.49 ERA over the last two conference weekends. They have allowed seven earned runs in 42 and 1/3 innings, while striking out 36 and walking 14. The Huskies, and their tenth place team batting average of .252, could be in for a long weekend. Utah at Oregon State
Oregon State improved to 10-2 in the Pac-12 conference after a three-game sweep of Utah this weekend. In the three games, Oregon State outscored Utah 13-4. In game one on Friday, Oregon State scored a run in the first inning after shortstop Tyler Smith, who returned to the starting lineup after being out since March 17, singled down the right field line. He would eventually score the lone run on a Dylan Davis sac-fly as Oregon State beat Utah 1-0. Starter Matt Boyd improved to 7-1 after throwing a complete-game two-hitter. He struck out eight and only allowed two hits. Continue reading
