SoCal Roundup: Fullerton & UCLA Walk-Off

After dropping their first game of the season, Southern California’s top ranked squads, No. 1 Cal State Fullerton and No. 9 UCLA, both bounced back with dramatic victories to ensure a series win.

It was a strong day in the Southland as 10 of the 11 SoCal teams in action scored victories. Long Beach State’s series sweep at the hands of No. 10 Vanderbilt and “one of the best pitching staffs I’ve ever seen,” according to Dirtbags’ head coach Troy Buckley, was the only blemish. CBD Visit: Washington State Knocks Off No. 1 Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. — Jason Monda is supposed to be one of the run producers in the middle of Washington State’s lineup after the senior led the team with 40 RBI last season. Against No. 1 Cal State Fullerton, Monda had started the season 0-for-8.

He was 0-for-5 Saturday when he came to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded in the 11th inning. Continue reading


SoCal Roundup: No. 1 Fullerton Upended

It only took until Day Two for the list of undefeated Southern California teams to trim to just one (not including UC Santa Barbara, who has yet to play).

But the team with a still unblemished record is not No. 1 Cal State Fullerton or fellow top 10 squad, UCLA. Instead it is the USC Trojans, who have needed 26 innings to determine a pair of games with Northwestern.

USC isn’t the only team playing extra baseball early on. Five of the SoCal games went into extra innings this afternoon.

The Titans clawed back from a 7-3 deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning, but in the ninth inning when Fullerton had an opportunity to collect a walk-off win after J.D. Davis tripled with one out, the Titans couldn’t get the job done. Continue reading

SoCal College Baseball Opening Weekend Preview

It’s Valentine’s Day!

Who cares? Unless your sweetie is taking you to the ballfield, we definitely don’t.

That’s because it’s Opening Day! The college baseball season officially kicks off today.

To get you ready for the opening weekend of Southern California baseball action, we’ve got where the teams will be playing along with an Around the Horn preview of series to watch.

And in this opening weekend preview, you’ll also get the preseason version of Shotgun’s SoCal Squad, your All-Southern California Team.

Teams wil be trying to start strong to open the season and there is an opportunity for teams to makes some noise. Long Beach State hosts Vanderbilt while No. 1 ranked Cal State Fullerton will welcome a Washington State squad that has a lot of potential.

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 8. Thomas Eshelman (Cal State Fullerton)

Thomas Eshelman improved to 12-2.College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 8 on the countdown is Cal State Fullerton sophomore RHP Thomas Eshelman. The Carlsbad, California native attended Carlsbad High School. He was a three year varsity letter winner. In his senior season in 2012, he finished the season with a 4-3 record, 1.64 ERA and 76 strikeouts while batting .323 with two home runs. His junior season, he had a 6-3 record with an ERA of 1.78 and 63 strikeouts. Continue reading

Number 25 on our countdown is Cal State Fullerton junior first baseman and RHP JD Davis. The Elk Grove High School native was a four-year letter winner at Elk Grove High School. He was a two time All-American selection in his junior and senior year with outstanding campaigns which he hit .486 batting average with 8 homers, 60 RBI, 1.80 ERA, 91 strikeouts as a junior and a .505 batting average, 9 homers, 45 RBI, 1.56 ERA, 70 strikeouts. CBD Top 100 Countdown: 65. Matt Chapman (Cal State Fullerton)

MattChapmanFullertonWe continue the countdown today with number 65, Cal State Fullerton infielder Matt Chapman. In his sophomore season with the Titans, Chapman started in 53 games at third base. During the 2013 season the infielder batted .285 with 53 hits, 41 runs scored and 37 RBI. His success on the diamond got Chapman named to the Fullerton All-Regional Team as well as the Big West Conference Second Team. The 6’2” third baseman was a permanent fixture in the three spot for the Titans due to his raw power and confidence at the plate. Continue reading

Cal-State Fullerton releases 2014 Schedule

Fullerton-LBSU - 13FULLERTON, Calif. – Returning to the field after a record-breaking season in 2013, Cal State Fullerton has released its 2014 schedule, highlighted by eight weekend series at Goodwin Field.

“Once again we were able to assemble a very challenging schedule that will test the team immediately,” third-year head coach Rick Vanderhook said. “I think our fans will be extremely pleased with quality of opponents that will visit Goodwin Field this year, and we will also have some demanding road trips to Oregon, Baylor and Wichita State.” Continue reading
