Chicago, IL – Not exactly a pitching clinic at Les Miller Field on a very pleasant Saturday as the University of Illinois Chicago Flames hosted the Butler Bulldogs for a Horizon League doubleheader. A combined 48 runs and 65 hits paired up with 6 errors made for an interesting 6:00 of baseball with UIC taking both games and sweeping the weekend series. The ball was flying out of the park in the early game with a total of 11 home runs smacked as the Flames won 21-11. In the second game doubles were more popular with a total of 13 hit in the UIC 12-4 win.
Head coach Steve Farley enters his 19th season with Butler baseball as the 2010 season approaches. Coach Farley and the Bulldogs look to improve from a very disappointing 2009 campaign that saw the team finish with a 13-41 record.
The Bulldogs will kick off the season at the Wofford College Tournament (Feb. 26-28) with games against NJIT, Wofford, and South Carolina Upstate. Butler then returns home for a mid-week game against Indiana Tech (March 3) before travelling to Winter Haven, Florida for their Florida Spring Trip (March 5-11).
#13 Baylor 7 at #6 Texas A&M 13
Brodie Greene went 4-for-5 and Nick Anders hit two home runs to lead No. 3 Texas A&M to a 13-7 win over No. 5 Baylor Sunday afternoon before 3,880 fans at Olsen Field.
Greene and Anders powered a 15-hit attack by the Aggie offense, which saw five players record at least two hits and two–Kevin Gonzalez and Joe Patterson–each drive in three runs.
Kansas 3 vs #4 Arizona State 2
Kansas defeated the No. 4 Arizona State University baseball team 3-2 on Saturday in the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise. The Sun Devils fall to 13-3 on the season with the loss.
Freshman Mitchell Lambson was the hard-luck loser, falling to 3-1 despite striking out 12 and allowing just two hits and one run in 5.2 innings out of the bullpen. Jason Franzblau started and gave up six hits and two earned runs in two innings.
Kansas 4 vs #4 Arizona State 9
Sophomore Tony Thompson went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer to extend his hitting streak to 21-straight games, but it was not enough for Kansas baseball Friday. Fourth-ranked Arizona State scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to tackle Kansas 9-4 in a non-conference baseball game Friday at Surprise Stadium.
