MAC Announces Baseball Players & Pitchers of the Week

East Division Player of the Week
Tommy Nurre, Miami, First Base
Senior, Cincinnati, Ohio (St. Xavier)

Nurre led Miami to a 4-1 week, including the RedHawks’ first series sweep since April 27-29, 2007. Miami outscored its opponents 55-24 over the five-game week. Nurre was 11-for-20 for the week (.550) and recorded 10 runs and six RBIs while drilling six extra-base hits (four doubles and two home runs). He recorded an impressive 1.050 slugging percentage. We have come across a few links from around the country which feature some interesting college baseball news and notes. The first article comes from Baseball America who looks at the movers and shakers who have changed their draft stock in a positive or negative way through the first couple of weeks of the season. The Tufts Daily looks at the 2009 Tufts baseball team who is looking to win the NESCAC but have Trinity College (CT) blocking their way to the championship. The Sun in Hamburg NY has a profile on University at Buffalo head coach Charlie Karstedt who is starting to turn around the program in the competitive MAC. The official Xavier athletic site has a profile on Zac Richard whose intimidating presence at the plate and on the mound. The next link of the day comes from Division 3 school Lynchburg College where Jeff Taylor broke the school record for stolen bases in only his second season. Greg Rohan, Kent State, Infield
Senior, North Lima, Ohio/South Range

Rohan had a career-high five hits and seven RBI in six at-bats and also scored a game-high four runs in the series finale against UNC Greensboro. He hit a two-run home run in the fourth and had his first career grand slam in the seventh. With the two home runs in the game, Rohan is currently tied for fifth in KSU history with 35 home runs. He finished the week with a .588 batting average, 1.059 slugging percentage, nine RBI’s, six runs and two homeruns. Continue reading

2009 MAC Preseason Poll

macCleveland, Ohio – Defending MAC Regular Season Champion Kent State and Western Michigan have been chosen by the league’s head coaches to win their respective divisions, released today by the league office. The Golden Flashes were also selected by nine of the leagues coaches to take home the 2009 MAC Tournament title. Continue reading

NYIT, Lafayette, and Canisus pick up wins

Old Westbury, NY * Junior Mark Stuckless drove in a run for the second consecutive game, but NYIT took advantage of five Hofstra errors and a strong pitching performance from Mike LaLuna to win Wednesday afternoon’s non-conference contest, 7-2. With the victory, NYIT improves to 13-23-1 while the Pride fall to 17-31. Continue reading
