MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State scored nine first-inning runs to set the tone for the afternoon, while second baseman Ross Kivett hit a pair of home runs as the top-seeded Wildcats opened the 2013 NCAA Manhattan Regional with a 20-11 victory over No. 4-seed Wichita State Friday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.
K-State, which scored in every inning except the second, improved to 42-17 on the year and will face the winner of the evening session between No. 2-seed Arkansas and third-seeded Bryant at 7 p.m., Saturday evening. Wichita State fell to 39-27 on the year and will face the loser of Friday’s evening matchup in an elimination game at 2 p.m., Saturday afternoon. Continue reading

In preparing for the weekend, I caught up with Oregon State head coach Pat Casey to talk about his thoughts on how the season has gone so far for the Beavers. Oregon State is 8-0 and off to their best start since 1962. “Obviously when you start 8-0, you feel like you did a lot of things well,” Casey said. We played fairly well on the defensive side of the game. I think we could have swung the bats better.” The Beavers enter the weekend with a .297 team batting average, but will look to improve upon that number against a team in Bryant who has only played three games this season. SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Highlighted by trips to Oregon State, Ohio State and Stony Brook, the Bryant University baseball team and head coach Steve Owens have announced the club’s 2013 schedule.
The defending Northeast Conference Regular-Season champions, the Bulldogs will face arguably their toughest 56-game slate since moving to the Division I ranks in 2009. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Redshirt freshman David Trexler earned his first career victory as No. 7 Florida State rolled past Valdosta State, 10-2 at Dick Howser Stadium.
In a pre-arranged controlled start, Trexler (1-0) tossed three innings of shutout baseball, surrendering only a pair of infield singles. The lanky right-hander established a new career high with four strikeouts in his second start and fifth appearance. He did not issue a walk. Continue reading
