The 5th FISU World University Baseball Championship will take place in Japan July 30-August 7, 2010. The competing teams are USA, Cuba, Canada, China, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, and Japan.

Five of the nine slots for the NAIA Baseball National Championship in Lewiston, ID were filled today, with Oklahoma City, Cal Baptist, Lee, Belhaven, and Point Loma Nazarene.
#3 Cal Baptist defeated #10 Madonna 11-4 at Riverside, CA. The Crusaders led 4-1 after three innings, but Mike Barro came in as a reliever for the Lancers, and allowed one hit during the last six innings. DH Drew Madrigal batted in the winning run in the fifth inning; he was 2-5 with two RBI for the game. This will be the Lancers’ second trip to the National Championship.
#4 Lee defeated William Jewell 9-6 in Cleveland, TN. The game was tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the sixth; J.J. Costantino hit a triple, then scored on an error to get the winning run for the Flames. This will be Lee’s fourth straight trip to Lewiston. William Jewell is moving to Division II. Two top seeds were defeated, and two more were taken to extra innings.
The game of the day was in Joliet, IL, where #2-ranked Cumberland was taken to 10 innings by #21 Campbellsville. (Campbellsville was the team that won an Opening Round tournament last year on the 21-consecutive-inning performance by Bryan Fuller.)
Campbellsville scored all their runs in the first inning. Cumberland tied it in the third with an RBI Triple by DH Max Kautz, who went 4-5 for the game. The Bulldogs started the top of the tenth with a single by C David Fanshawe. Kautz beat out a chopper between the mound and third base, but pinch-hitter Jesse Bowman lined out to rightfield on a great sliding catch by the Tigers’ Logan Smith. CF Dave Weyer singled sharply up the middle. 2B Luke Gadow gloved the ball, but it bounced into short centerfield, allowing pinch-runner Jason Frost to score from second. 1B Greg Appleton followed with a single to center, scoring Kautz for a 6-4 advantage. Houston-Victoria, with an ISR ranking of #35, pulled off a major upset on the first day of of the NAIA Opening Round. They defeated #7-ranked British Columbia 5-0 at Fresno, CA.
LHP Broc Haymon, who has the lowest ERA in the NAIA (1.32), pitched a complete-game shutout for the Jaguars, held the Thunderbirds to five hits, struck out 12. 2B Anthony Phillips scored the winning run on a fielder’s choice in the second inning. Read the rest of this entry »
Results of the NAIA Coaches’ Poll for May 12, 2010, and Boyd Nation’s Iterative Strength Rating. This is the final poll for the 2010 season, and will be used for seeding the NAIA Opening Round tournaments, which start May 18. (poll below)
#1 Lewis-Clark State defeated Division III George Fox 7-3, and defeated Division I Seattle U. Twice, 8-7 and 5-3. The game against George Fox was tied in the seventh inning, and the Warriors needed an RBI single by Jack Eccles and a sacrifice fly by Kawika Emsley-Pai to get the first win against Seattle U. Hentry Buenrostro got a win in this game, and a save in the second game. Arlo Evasick went 7 2/3 innings for the Redhawks in the second game. He held the Warriors to one run during the first seven innings, but gave up a three-run home run by DH Pat Murray with two out in the eighth to get the loss. The three runs were unearned, and the home run was only the fourth hit given up by Evasick.
The regular season is over for the Warriors, and they finished it with a 16-game winning streak. A game scheduled at Gonzaga next week was cancelled, and the Redhawks were the only Division I team the Warriors played this year. #1 Lewis-Clark State swept three games against Oregon Tech. They won the first game 18-0, but needed eight innings to win the scheduled-for-seven-innings third game 7-6. Shea Bedortha and Darryl Swearingen of the Hustlin’ Owls held the Warriors to seven hits, and the Owls out-hit the Warriors 11-7. The Owls took a 6-5 lead in the top of the eighth on a home run by 3B Cory Staniforth, but the Warriors tied it in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly by SS Josh Ashenbrenner, then won it when 2B Danny Anguiano scored on a ground out. #2 Cumberland swept double-headers Against Milligan and Lyon. Lyon, however, was able to do something that no other team has done this year; hit Shawn Schaefer. Schaefer left the game after 5+ innings, with the Bulldogs trailing 10-8; he allowed ten hits. The Bulldogs got six runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 14-10. Schaefer got a no-decision, and Daniel Kern got the win. Sam Kikla hit .692 for the four games, walked twice, and was hit by a pitch three times; he was named TranSouth Player of the Week. #1 Lewis-Clark State swept four games games against Concordia-Portland, and only one of the games was close. Tyler Lichty, Stephen Foster, Cody Fassold, and Tyler Knigge got the wins. Although Concordia went home without a win, they got a triple play in the fourth game. With the bases loaded, Brian Burke hit a one-hop ground ball to 3B John Houts. Houts stepped on the bag for one out, then threw to 1B Brady Miletich for the second out. Miletic then threw to C Tommy Whalen for the third out; the baserunner at third, Jason Hague, had headed for the dugout, apparently thinking that Burke’s ball was caught on the fly, and was ruled out for being outside the base path. #2 Cumberland swept a double-header against Martin Methodist, 6-4 and 11-1, and a scheduled third game was cancelled due to inclement weather. C Max Kautz hit a three-run home run in the first game, and another one in the second. Shawn Schaefer struck out ten in the first game. This was his seventh complete game of the season. His record is 10-0, 1.66 ERA, with 73 strikeouts, and he is tied with eight other players, including Scott Swinson of #4 Lee, Chad Blauer of #10 Point Loma Nazarene, Brandt Hinton of #11 Belhaven, David Harden of #13 Southern Polytechnic, Bruce Ammende of #21 York, and Ian Pick of #23 Campbellsville for most wins in the NAIA. In the second game, Aaron Wilkerson struck out nine of the 18 batters he faced (the game was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule), and his record is 8-1, 2.08 ERA. #1 Lewis-Clark State won two of three against #4 British Columbia, and swept three games against Corban. Against British Columbia, the Warriors got an excellent start from Colby Hawk, and two excellent relief efforts by Henry Buenrostro. Freshman Zach Hull, making only his third appearance of the season, pitched a complete-game shutout against Corban. #2 Cumberland swept three games against Freed-Hardeman, 16-5, 4-1, and 5-1. In the first game, Max Kautz hit two home runs and batted in five runs, and Shawn Schaefer ran his record to 9-0, 1.41 ERA, 63 strikeouts. Aaron Wilkerson pitched a four-hit complete game in the second game, and his record is 7-1, 2.10 ERA. #1 Lewis-Clark State swept three games against Division III Willamette. The Warriors’ last loss was April 15. They have won 13 straight, and are having their best start in school history. After a 5-4 loss to #21 Campbellsville, #2 Cumberland swept three games against Trevecca Nazarene, defeated Lindsey Wilson 6-3, and Bryan 15-5. One of the Trevecca wins was 15-0, and Robert Post pitched the mercy-rule-shortened five-inning shutout. He was named TranSouth Conference Pitcher of the Week. #1 Lewis-Clark State swept four games against Azusa Pacific. The third game of the series was an 8-7 win in 12 innings. Brian Burke hit a grand slam home run (his 13th home run of the season) in the fifth inning, and Travis Georgius hit an RBI single in the 12th to win it. The Warriors won the fourth game 6-5, on an two-RBI single by Bryan Abrey in the bottom of the ninth. The Warriors have seven pitchers with ERA’s less than 2.0; Stephen Foster is 2-1, 0.50 ERA, Tyrell Poggemeyer is 2-0, 0.92 ERA, with 31 strikeouts. Upcoming: at Division III Willamette April 10-11.
#2 Oklahoma City swept three games against Oklahoma Christian, two of them shutouts. Dustin Williams pitched a complete game for the first shutout, Mike Richard went 8 1/3 innings, allowed four hits and struck out ten in the second one, a 2-0 win for the Stars. Richard is 7-1, 2.17 ERA with 47 strikeouts on the season, and he is the Sooner Athletic Conference pitcher of the week. Williams also has seven wins. The Stars lead the SAC with a 14-1 record. #1 Lewis-Clark State won two games against College of Idaho, and three more against British Columbia. Four of the five games were close, and the final game of the British Columbia series went eleven innings. The Thunderbirds scored single runs in the top of the tenth and eleventh innings, but the Warriors kept the game going with an RBI single by LF Gino Casini in the bottom of the tenth, then won it when CF Jason Hague scored on a squeeze bunt by DH Connor Moore in the bottom of the eleventh. Brian Burke has 12 home runs for the Warriors. Upcoming: Azusa Pacific March 31-April 2.
#2 Southern Polytechnic won two of three against Shorter. David Harden picked up his eighth win of the season in a 16-4 win for the Hornets, and he leads the NAIA in wins. Tim Day of Panorama, Australia got the seven-inning complete game win for Shorter. The Hornets lead the Southern States Athletics Conference with an 8-1 record. Upcoming: at #8 Lee April 2-3.
#3 Oklahoma City swept three games against Rogers State, and defeated Bacone. The Stars have won ten straight, and lead the Sooner Athletic Conference with an 11-1 record. Southern Polytechnic retains #1 in Boyd Nation’s Iterative Strength Rating. The Hornets are 29-2, 6-0 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. The Hornets allowed two runs in three games against Southern Wesleyan. Blake Mainor, Hunter Dinsmore, and Ty Williams combined for a 9-0 seven-inning three hit shutout. David Hardin got his seventh win of the season in a 7-1 win; his ERA is 1.65, and he has 45 strikeouts. He remains tied with Taylor Siemens of Cal Baptist and Kelyn Schellenberg of Fresno Pacific for most wins in the NAIA. Upcoming: Shorter March 26-27.
Lewis-Clark State defeated Division III Whitworth 15-2, and #15 College of Idaho 10-7. In the C. of Idaho game, Brian Burke hit his tenth home run of the season. Burke also leads the Warriors with 30 RBI. Upcoming: at College of Idaho March 25, British Columbia March 27-28.
#2 British Columbia swept four games at Concordia-Portland, and two of the wins were shutouts. Eric Brown, David Otterman, and Miles Verweel combined for the first shutout, and Sheldon McDonald and Taylor King combined for the second one. The Thunderbirds are 20-3, 14-2 in NAIA West play. Verweel is the team’s ERA leader at 1.42. Brown is 5-0, 1.74 ERA with 22 strikeouts. Freshman 1B Andrew Firth leads the team in hitting at .440.
