Matt Foat takes a ground ball himselfLONG BEACH, Calif. — On Saturday and Sunday, Brandon Garcia propelled USC to victory with his bat, knocking home runs in both games. Tuesday night at Blair Field, the senior co-captain used his right arm to help the Trojans to a 4-2 victory against Long Beach State.

Garcia picked up the win on the mound pitching 5 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits and one walk while striking out four. Continue reading

Kevin Roundtree calms down Brandon GarciaLONG BEACH, Calif. — The USC Trojans knocked 12 hits on their way to a 4-2 win against Long Beach State Tuesday night at Blair Field. Matt Foat led the way with three hits while Garrett Stubbs, Jake Hernandez and Garrett Houts each had multi-hit games as well. The win moves USC to 4-0 on the season — the first time the Trojans have started 4-0 start since 2005. That year, coincidentally, is the last time USC made the NCAA Tournament.

USC head coach Frank Cruz and Jacksonville assistant Tim Montez shake hands after the gameLOS ANGELES — It had already been a rough weekend for the Jacksonville Dolphins after losing the first two games to USC. It only got worse in the bottom of the eighth inning of the series finale Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field. With two outs, USC designated hitter Brandon Garcia hit a high pop up to the left side.

Shortstop Ethan Loosen, third baseman Jimmy Appleby and left fielder Jonathan Murphy converged in shallow left field. But instead of a simple third out to the eighth inning, the ball bounced out of Loosen’s glove. It didn’t end there though. The ball was picked up and fired in the direction of first base…where no one was at. Continue reading
