SoCal Roundup: Best Catcher in the Country?

In college baseball, starting catchers often get the mid-week games off to rest their legs in preparation for the more important weekend series, especially during the conference season, but with an extra day of rest thanks to the Easter schedule, Shane Zeile was behind the plate for UCLA on Tuesday.

He proved to be a difference maker in the Bruins’ matchup with Loyola Marymount and afterwards his coach lauded high praise on him, calling Zeile one of the top catchers in the country.

Check out how Zeile impacted the game, what else Savage had to say about him and get the full roundup of Tuesday’s Southern California college baseball action. We’ve got you covered with photo galleries from San Diego State, USC and UCLA:

SoCal Roundup: Snapping Sweep Droughts

Cal State Fullerton and USC both ended lengthy conference series droughts. But only one team did it in a positive fashion. Fittingly, UC Santa Barbara/Long Beach State and San Diego State/UC Irvine concluded their series with yet another tight game in each series finale.

SoCal Roundup: Zero After Zero

There were three walk-off wins, but the most impressive performance came in a game that ended with neither team scoring a run the final eight innings. There were also two relievers that were lights out for a combined 10.1 innings.

SoCal Roundup: Pitcher BOMB

Rick Vanderhook didn’t travel with the team to San Luis Obispo and probably wouldn’t have liked what he saw had he went anyway. The nation’s top two closers, Sam Moore and Michael Cederoth, ended up deciding a game. See who came out on top.

But two unlikely heroes headline Thursday’s Southern California college baseball roundup that features video interviews and photo galleries from Northridge and Long Beach State:

Cal State Fullerton places Rick Vanderhook on Leave

VanderhookSmallUPDATE #2: April 17th at 9:02pm ET

After losing to UC Santa Barbara last Sunday, Vanderhook told Shotgun Spratling:

“They’re a soft group and if they keep doing what they’re doing, they’re going to be the first team from Fullerton not to play in the postseason in 26 years.”

UPDATE #1: April 17th at 8:24pm ET
We have spoken to many sources around the Cal-State Fullerton program that stated Vanderhook’s post game punishment was excessive. It included berating players while having extensive running. One of the sources stated to us that this was “Bobby Knight” level stuff. We will update with more information as we investigate it.

Original Post

Rick Vanderhook has been placed on administrative leave.

“Effective today, Cal State Fullerton’s head coach Rick Vanderhook has been placed on paid administrative leave. The university has received allegations that it is obligated to review.”

As always, we will be all over this with coverage from Shotgun Spratling and myself.

SoCal Roundup: Frosh SS Web Gems

Both Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount have both been strong defensively and are among the top West Coast Conference teams, despite having to rely on a pair of freshmen shortstops.

But rather than being bothered by being thrust into the fire, Manny Jefferson and David Fletcher have thrived under the pressures of being regular starters for regional contenders just a season removed from high school ball. Both players made major contributions with the glove on Tuesday.

SoCal Roundup: Suspended Due to Darkness

Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara matched up in a wacky contest that featured a Thomas Eshelman walk, a Joey Epperson strikeout, 18 runs and no resolution. There was a resolution at Dedeaux Field even though it took 13 innings.

SoCal Roundup: Super Regional Rematch

When Cal State Fullerton and UCLA, the two premier Southern California programs in recent history, it’s always a good matchup, but there was a little extra motivation for Fullerton on Tuesday night as the Titans played the team that eliminated them from postseason play last year. Find out if the emotion and motivation proved to be enough.

USC took a ninth inning lead against Pepperdine but the Waves threatened to rally back in the bottom of the inning. Trailing San Diego State 4-2, UC Riverside also rallied in the ninth inning. See if either could complete the comeback.

Fullerton Gets Measure of Retribution Against UCLA

Cal State Fullerton’s season ended last year with UCLA celebrating on the Titans’ home field, having earned a College World Series berth after sweeping the Fullerton Super Regional. Before the game, the Titans’ coaching staff told the players to remember the crushing feeling they had watching the Bruins’ joy.

The Titan players responded, grinding out a 4-3 win over UCLA (18-13) thanks to a three-run fifth inning.

“They dogpiled on our field last year, so it was nice to get a W over them,” junior third baseman Matt Chapman said. “It’s just another game, but it definitely had a little bit of redemption in it.” Continue reading
