Indiana looking to rebound in 2011

The Indiana Baseball team won their second straight title in 2010.  Not on the diamond, but in flag football intramurals, with head coach Tracy Smith quarterbacking the team.  “I am about teaching our kids there is value in winning.  I don’t care what you are doing, it is better to win than lose.”  Winning was common for Hoosiers in 2009 on the diamond, when they entered the Big Ten Tournament as the three seed and swept through it on their way to their first Big Ten Title under Tracy Smith since he took over the program in 2006.  After an injury plagued 2010 that saw them squeak into the Big Ten Tournament, the Hoosiers look to come out swinging in 2011. Illinois releases 2011 Schedule

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illinois head coach Dan Hartleb announced his team’s schedule for the 2011 season Monday, with the team slated to play in the third-annual Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge on Feb. 18-20, and the Metrodome Tournament at 2010 NCAA Tournament qualifier Minnesota. The Illini will face three NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago in 2010 – Minnesota, Illinois State and Saint Louis, and will play a three-game series at Florida Gulf Coast, which went 38-20 last season. The season start date of Feb. 18 will be the fourth-earliest start date in school history and earliest since Illinois started the 2001 season on Feb. 17. Continue reading


Casey Close a Behind the Scenes Star

Former Michigan outfielder Casey Close has transitioned into the agent business representing high profile shortstop Derek Jeter. Close was an outstanding player for the Wolverines hitting .440 with 19 home runs and 72 RBI during his senior campaign in 1986. He was named a first team All-American and Baseball America’s Player of the Year. He ended up being drafted in the seventh round by the New York Yankees as he spent five seasons bouncing around the minors spending parts of three seasons in AAA. Continue reading


Friday Checkin with Indiana’s Tracy Smith

Indiana head coach Tracy Smith continued with his Friday checkins with the media relations department. He talks about how well his staff did during the early signing period. He also discusses some of the great team bonding activities he has done recently including a paintball trip with the team and a no-shave November which is a change for the Hoosiers as they usually are clean shaven according to Coach Smith. Michigan State releases 2011 Schedule

Mandatory Credit - Rey Del Rio / MSU Athletic Communications<br /> EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State head coach Jake Boss has announced the 2011 Spartan baseball schedule. Highlights of the 55-game slate include 18 home games, 12 games against in-state rivals, including a three-game series with Michigan, a matchup against 2010 College World Series participant Clemson, and the fifth-annual Crosstown Showdown against the Lansing Lugnuts.

The Spartans will open the 2011 season by playing in the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge for the third consecutive year. MSU’s season opener is set Feb. 18 against Notre Dame at 4 p.m. at Dunedin Stadium in Dunedin, Fla., which is the spring training home of the Toronto Blue Jays. Michigan State topped Notre Dame, 4-2, in a fall scrimmage Sept. 18 at McLane Baseball Stadium.

Minnesota Players find Joy in Outreach Effort


MinnesotaExtremeMakeoverVolunteering. For many young adults, it’s just another obligation—the kind of thing you do to boost your résumé, put on a graduate school application, to fulfill an athletic program requirement.
But not for the student-athletes on the University of Minnesota’s baseball team. For them, it’s about giving back.

Especially for Kurt Schlangen and Matt Puhl, two of the team’s most dedicated volunteers.
