FARMVILLE, Va. — Longwood University Director of Athletics Troy Austin has announced the appointment of Brian McCullough as the new baseball head coach for 2013-14. McCullough, a former starting pitcher and team captain for the Lancers, takes over for Charles Buddy Bolding, who recently retired after 35 years at the helm (953-544-4). McCullough has served the past four years as an assistant coach, most-recently as the program’s recruiting coordinator and pitching coach, while also assisting with all baseball operations, including scheduling. He has played professionally in the independent Frontier, Northern and Atlantic Leagues (2007-11). Continue reading
South Carolina 6 Liberty 4 (Final)
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina defeated Liberty 6-4 on Monday afternoon to claim the NCAA Columbia Regional title at Carolina Stadium, securing the program’s fourth straight trip to the Super Regionals.
It will be the Gamecocks’ (42-18) 11th trip to the Super Regionals in the last 14 years, which ranks second in the nation behind Florida State during that span. The win is South Carolina’s 27th-straight postseason win at home, including a 16-0 mark at Carolina Stadium. Continue reading
Liberty 3 Clemson 1
A strong effort by Liberty starting pitcher Trey Lambert and four hits by second baseman Bryan Aanderud, helped push the Liberty Flames past the Clemson Tigers, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in a Columbia, S.C. Regional elimination game at Carolina Stadium.
Lambert moves to 8-3 on the year, allowing one run on seven hits during his 7 2/3 innings of work. He struck out one and walked two batters. However, the key for the right-hander was that he stranded two Tigers at third base and three at second base. Continue reading
Clemson 10 St. Louis 2
Columbia, SC – Steve Wilkerson hit two homers with five RBIs and Daniel Gossett pitched 6.0 effective innings to lead #17 Clemson to a 10-2 win over Saint Louis in the Columbia Regional in front of 5,485 fans at Carolina Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers, who evened their record in the regional at 1-1 and snapped their six-game losing streak, improved to 40-21 on the season. The Billikens, who went 0-2 in the regional, ended their season with a 41-21 record. Continue reading
Virginia Tech 9 Coastal Carolina 1
BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech got strong pitching from starter Devin Burke, and both Andrew Rash and Chad Pinder hit solo home runs to lift the Hokies to a 9-1 victory over Coastal Carolina in an NCAA regional game at English Field on Saturday afternoon.
Mark Zagunis and Rash each drove in three runs for Tech (39-21), which staved off elimination in the double-elimination format. Coastal Carolina (37-23) saw its season come to an end. Continue reading
Liberty 8 Clemson 3
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Catcher Trey Wimmer knocked in a career-high six runs and right-hander Josh Richardson pitched his third complete game of the year, leading the Big South Champion Liberty Flames past the Clemson Tigers, 8-3, in Game 1 of the NCAA Columbia, S.C. Regional at Carolina Stadium.
Wimmer drove in a career-high six runs with two hits, a two-run double and three-run home run to go along with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Playing in his home state, the Greenwood, S.C., native connected for his fifth round tripper of the year in the sixth inning to give Liberty a five-run cushion at the time. Continue reading

BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Sooners were down but not out, rallying to defeat Coastal Carolina, 7-3, in their NCAA Regional opener at English Field Friday.
Oklahoma (41-19) trailed 3-0 after two innings, but scored seven unanswered runs and shut down the Chanticleer offense with a complete-game from Jonathan Gray (10-2). Continue reading

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – East Tennessee State University, Mercer University and the Virginia Military Institute have been extended invitations to join the Southern Conference beginning July 1, 2014, SoCon Commissioner John Iamarino announced from the league’s spring meetings Thursday.
ETSU and Mercer have accepted the invitations to join the conference next year, while VMI is expected to formally ratify joining the league Friday when its Board of Visitors meets. Continue reading

In what seems like a yearly event, South Carolina will play host to their fourth consecutive regional and 15th all-time regional as the No. 1 seed of the Columbia Regional. The Gamecocks will welcome in-state foe No. 2 seed Clemson for the second straight year. South Carolina defeated the Tigers two out of three this season. No. 3 seed Liberty and No. 4 seed Saint Louis round out the regional.
