2014 NCAA Regional Preview: Charlottesville

No. 1 Virginia
One of the most tested teams in the tournament, Virginia (44-13) has played nine teams that made it to this spring’s field of 64. Ranked between from three to four in the national polls, Brian O’Connor’s team has been impressive, but saw their bid for the ACC title get cut short with a 6-4 loss to FSU on Saturday. Hosting this regional bodes very well for the Cavaliers, as they are 29-3 on their home diamond. Continue reading

2014 NCAA Regional Preview: Columbia (SC)

The teams

  • No. 1 seed South Carolina (42-16). 2. Maryland (36-21). 3. Old Dominion (36-24). 4. Campbell (40-19)
  • South Carolina is making the 30th NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and is in the tournament for the 15th consecutive season.
  • Maryland is making its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance all-time, but its first since 1971.
  • Old Dominion is making its eighth NCAA appearance all-time, but first since 2000.
  • Campbell won the Big South Conference Tournament championship to earn the school’s third NCAA appearance and first since 1990.

Campbell’s Ryan Thompson breaks School Record for Saves

Campbell University closer Ryan Thompson has been flying under the radar the last two seasons but he broke the school record for saves in a season with the Camels for the second straight season with his 11th of the season on Wednesday night. Thompson currently sports a 4-1 record with a 0.90 ERA in 60.1 innings this year. He has struck out 67 batters while walking 20. He was named a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award on Wednesday. You can check out video of him below. Continue reading

NCBWA LogoMORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 2 today. Liberty’s junior infielder Ryan Seiz was named National Hitter of the Week, while Maryland’s senior right-handed pitcher Jake Stinnett was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season. Continue reading

(www.BigSouthSports.com) – Liberty and Coastal Carolina have been chosen as the favorites for the second-straight year in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason baseball poll for the 2014 season in a vote of the League’s Head Coaches, the League announced today. In addition, the coaches voted Charleston Southern’s Bobby Ison the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year, while Ryan Thompson of Campbell was named the Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year. 2014 CBD Top 100 Players Countdown: 51. Ben Smith (Coastal Carolina)

BenSmithCCUWe continue the countdown today with number 51, Coastal Carolina LHP Ben Smith. In his sophomore season with the Chanticleers, Smith played an important part of Coastal’s success in the 2013 season. As part of the starting rotation, the southpaw made 16 starts combining for 92.2 IP which was good for most on the team. Standing at 6’2”, Smith posted a 5-4 record with a 2.23 ERA as he helped the Chanticleers to a 37-23 record. Smith also led the team with 83 strikeouts and held opponents to a .219 batting average. Campbell releases 2014 Schedule

Campbell2010Schedule_thumb.jpgBUIES CREEK, N.C. – Home dates with in-state rivals North Carolina State and UNC Wilmington, two home tournaments, a full Big South slate plus matchups with 13 opponents who made postseason appearances over the last two seasons highlight Campbell’s 2014 baseball schedule.

Coming off a Big South Regular Season Championship and a school record 49 wins last season, the Camels will play 33 home contests in 2014. Campbell is 60-12 over the last two years in Buies Creek, going 31-5 in 2013 at Jim Perry Stadium. Continue reading
