BATON ROUGE, La. -  Rightfielder Mikie Mahtook hit for the cycle and the third-ranked Tigers pounded 20 hits as LSU defeated Alcorn State, 17-5, Tuesday night in Alex Box Stadium.

Mahtook became the first Tiger to hit for the cycle since Aaron Hill accomplished the feat on April 5, 2003 against South Carolina. Mahtook went 4-for-4 with five runs scored as he doubled in the first inning, singled in the second, ripped a triple off the wall in the fifth and blasted a two-run dinger in the sixth.

Atlantic Sun releases Preseason Coaches Poll and Team

atlantic-sun-logo MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun conference announced its baseball preseason coaches’ poll and all-conference honors Wednesday with FGCU earning the nod as the conference favorite.

The Eagles also cleaned up in the superlative awards with first baseman Zach Maxfield earned the preseason Player of the Year honors and Chris Sale picked up the Pitcher of the Year nod by a unanimous decision.

Austin Peay signs Nine to NLI’s

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Facing the loss of 11 seniors, including four pitchers, following the upcoming 2010 campaign, Austin Peay State University head baseball coach Gary McClure and his coaching staff had plenty of work to do on the recruiting trail. That work paid off, Wednesday, as nine players signed a letter of intent on the first day of the signing period.

2009 Atlantic Sun Preseason Poll

MACON, Ga. – In each of its first three years in the Atlantic Sun, Kennesaw State has improved its standing and on the heels of its runner-up finish in 2008, the A-Sun coaches have installed the Owls as the preseason favorite, the conference office announced on Thursday.

Led by the Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Kyle Heckathorn, the Owls received six of the 11 first-place votes outdistancing themselves from a bunched pack of Lipscomb, the 2008 conference champion, FGCU, the 2008 regular-season champion and Stetson. Lipscomb earned three first-place votes, FGCU and Jacksonville, slotted fifth, split the remaining two votes. Continue reading

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Seven games against three participants of the 2008 NCAA Baseball Tournament highlights the 2009 schedule for the Belmont baseball team, which was announced on Friday.

The Bruins open the season on Feb. 20 against Illinois State at Greer Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. starting at 3 p.m. Belmont will play its first eight contests at home before the first road game on Mar. 3 against Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky. beginning at 3 p.m. The Hilltoppers made the NCAA Tournament last season.

Vandy leads Volunteer State

Kendall Rogers has written a great article about the baseball programs in the state of Tennessee. He ranks all the schools with the Vanderbilt Commodores as the best program but we all know that isn’t a real surprise. Corbin has really developed a solid program in Nashville and keeps bringing in some great recruits.The University of Tennessee comes in at the runners up spot under second year head coach Todd Raleigh. CSTV Tuesday Update

CSTV continues their series of articles with two conference previews and Doug Kroll checking in on the coaching carousel. Eric Sorensen previews the ACC which he lists North Carolina, UVA, and Miami as favorites. He lists FSU, Clemson, and Georgia Tech as contenders. He puts Wake Forest as the darkhouse. The full preview is available here. Sorensen also previews the Atlantic Sun conference. He puts Stetson as the overwhelming favorite after they qualified for the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The contenders are Belmont, Mercer, and Jacksonville. The darkhorse candidate is Lipscomb. The full preview is available here. Stetson picked to win A-Sun

MACON, Ga. – Stetson is the overwhelming favorite to repeat as Atlantic Sun Conference baseball champion in 2008 in the league’s preseason poll. The Hatters garnered eight of 12 first place votes in the poll conducted among the conference’s head coaches. Hatter outfielder Justin Bass and Lipscomb catcher Caleb Joseph split preseason Player of the Year honors, while Lipscomb’s Rex Brothers claimed Pitcher of the Year honors. Continue reading
