With 2014 quickly approaching the Patriot League and its members continue to work hard in anticipation for a new Patriot League season. WEST POINT, N.Y. – Fifty-two regular season games, including 21 at Doubleday Field at Johnson Stadium, highlight the 2014 Army baseball schedule, announced today by interim head coach Matt Reid.

The Army, Navy, and Air Force baseball programs have been forced to stop fall competitions with the federal government shutting down all intercollegiate activities at the service academies. This weekend’s football games between Navy and Air Force and the Army at Boston College are both unlikely to happen unless the government shutdown is resolved in the very near future.
Update #1: College Baseball Daily has learned that Joe Sottolano was let go for “sexual misconduct” according to several sources. It did not involve any current Army students.
College Baseball Daily has learned that Army has fired Joe Sottolano for a “pattern of behavior” according to a press release from the academy. Sottolano had been coaching at West Point since 1992 becoming the head coach in 2000. He has a career record of 391-286-5 in his 13 years as the head coach. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia – Corey Dick and Matt Keeler collected three hits apiece and UNCW ended the game with a triple play as the Seahawks eliminated Army with a 9-5 win on Saturday at the NCAA Charlottesville Regional at Davenport Field.

The Army Black Knights continued their dominance of the Patriot League by sweeping the Holy Cross Crusaders on Sunday afternoon by scores of 9-4 and 5-4. The wins by the Black Knights give them their sixth Patriot League title under Joe Sottalano as they have now made the NCAA Tournament in back to back seasons for the first time since they completed the feat in the 2004 and 2005. CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Army baseball team was picked first in the Patriot League preseason poll which was released on Wednesday. The Black Knights earned five first-place votes and finished tied with Holy Cross atop the preseason listing, which was compiled by a vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
