Rick Vanderhook didn’t travel with the team to San Luis Obispo and probably wouldn’t have liked what he saw had he went anyway. The nation’s top two closers, Sam Moore and Michael Cederoth, ended up deciding a game. See who came out on top.
But two unlikely heroes headline Thursday’s Southern California college baseball roundup that features video interviews and photo galleries from Northridge and Long Beach State:
The three teams from furthest south in Southern California each wrapped up series sweeps, but could Pepperdine and UC Riverside do the same? Who came out on top in rubber matches between UCLA/Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton/UC Davis?
And up on the Central Coast, in a series that had already featured two great games, Cal Poly/UC Santa Barbara’s Sunday matchup was no different. Find out who came out on top.
All that plus a roundup of Sunday’s Southern California college baseball action with photo galleries from the Blue-Green Rivalry and UC Riverside:
Three games came down to the wire and required walk-off wins — two to help a pair of SoCal squads wrap up a series win and one to crush the heart of the opponent after a valiant comeback.
UCLA went for a sweep while USC tried to win its first Pac-12 series. Cal State Fullerton tried to rebound after being shutout Saturday night and something must be in the water in San Diego — a day after the Toreros put up 18 runs their crosstown rivals matched the output.

Four SoCal squads take to the skies for major road trips this weekend with three teams traveling to one side or the other of the Red River. The Big 12’s Baylor and Oklahoma State get a pair of Southern California gems in No. 4 Cal State Fullerton and San Diego while a strong Sam Houston State squad will welcome Cal State Northridge.
Another quality squad from the Lone Star State will make its way to Los Angeles as Houston will make stops at USC, UCLA and Pepperdine as part of the Not-So-Dodgertown Classic (the name is explained below). The Big 12 will also send a team this way as West Virginia makes its second cross-country trip to Southern Cali to participate in the UCR Tournament with the Highlanders and Sacramento State.
But the biggest pepper test (baseball’s version of the litmus) will be UC Santa Barbara’s road trip to Tucson for Arizona’s Hi Corbett Tournament that will feature the home-standing Wildcats and No. 12 Mississippi State.
To get you ready for the Southern California baseball action, we’ve got your schedule and Around the Horn preview of series to watch. Continue reading
CORVALLIS, Ore. – A big early lead was just enough to keep the Texas A&M Aggies hopes alive for at least a few more hours.
The Aggies led UC Santa Barbara 4-0 after three innings – getting a two-run double from first baseman Cole Lankford in the third – and escaped the Gauchos seventh-inning rally by turning to closer Jason Jester. That got them a 5-4 victory and a shot at the Corvallis Regional’s top-seed, Oregon State. Continue reading
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Austin Pettibone lifted UC Santa Barbara on his shoulders, delivering three pitches for strikes and keeping Texas A&M off-balance for 7 2/3 innings in the Corvallis Regional. The Gauchos responded to his efforts, providing enough offense for a 6-4 victory in their postseason appearance since 2001.
For A&M, workhorse ace Daniel Mengden wasn’t his usual efficient self, lasting just one out into the fourth. He gave up six hits, five runs – four earned – and three walks in front of 1,783 baseball fans at Goss Stadium. Continue reading
