Boston College names Jimmy Van Ostrand as Assistant Coach

VanOstrandChestnut Hill, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team rounded out its staff by added Jimmy Van Ostrand as a volunteer coach, head coach Mike Gambino announced on Wednesday afternoon. Van Ostrand brings seven years of international and minor league playing experience to the Eagles.

“It is extremely important to me that we surround our players with high character people who can help them develop on the field and also into quality men off the field. I think Jimmy fits that mold and is a great fit with our staff,” Gambino said. “He is coming off a great playing career and comes to us with extensive experience that our boys will be able to draw from. He will be a huge asset to our program and we are extremely lucky and excited to have him join as staff.” Continue reading

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – As was announced in the fall on the University of Notre Dame baseball team’s Twitter account (@NDBaseball), the artificial surface company FieldTurf began installing a state-of-the-art artificial field at Frank Eck Stadium in late October with plans to have the facility ready for play at the beginning of the 2014 home slate in mid-March.

However, due to unseasonably poor weather around South Bend in November, an unknown number of home games will be relocated to other stadiums until the project can be finished with the hope of only playing a handful of games away from the Eck. Continue reading

All Sports Photo Day 3: D.J. Stewart: BaseballCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the season with our 2014 Top 100 College Baseball Players. Today, we continue the countdown at number 32 with Florida State sophomore DJ Stewart. The multi-sport high school athlete at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida hit .424, driving in 29 runs while hitting nine home runs as a senior.He was very successful at winning state titles with five combined state championships in his career at Bolles (three in football and two in baseball). Today, we continue the countdown at number 34 with Derek Fisher from Virginia. The Rexmont, Pennsylvania native attended Cedar Crest High School where he had an outstanding career including being named all-state three times. He hit .484 with 12 home runs and 31 RBI as a senior. He was selected by Texas Rangers in sixth round of 2011 MLB Draft but decided to head to Virginia.  Continue reading

All Sports Photo Day 3: Luke Weaver: BaseballCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the season with our 2014 Top 100 College Baseball Players. Today, we continue the countdown at number 38 with Florida State junior Luke Weaver from Deland, Florida.  He checks in at a lanky 6’2 and 170 pounds. As a senior, he earned second team Rawlings All-America and first team All-State honors while being first team All-Area during his sophomore and junior seasons. He was drafted in the 19th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2011 MLB Draft but decided to go to Florida State. Continue reading

FSU’s Jameis Winston being Looked at by MLB Squads?

JameisWinstonThe big story today is the matchup between Florida State and Auburn on the gridiron which features Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston leading the Seminoles. Winston is an accomplished baseball player in addition to his football skills as he appeared in 41 games (32 starts) with a .235 batting average while driving in nine runs. He made 17 appearances on the bump going 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA while holding hitters to a batting average of .176. Continue reading

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 46. Skye Bolt (North Carolina)

SkyeBoltWe continue the countdown today with number 46, UNC outfielder Skye Bolt. In his freshman campaign with the Tar heels, Bolt impressed the coaches with his switch-hitting ability and raw power from both sides of the plate. The 6’2 rookie show great athleticism in the field, equipped with a strong and accurate arm. Bolt played and started in 54 games during the 2013 season and posted a .321 average which was good for fourth on the squad. The freshman outfielder quickly adjusted to the high competition collecting 68 hits, 6 HR and 51 RBI in his first year. Continue reading
