2014 Golden Spikes Award Watch List

GoldenSpikesAward.jpgDURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball released its 60-man preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list on Friday, launching the organization’s journey to naming the top amateur baseball player in the country on July 17. Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2014 for the 37th time.

The watch list features 60 of the nation’s top amateur players, and will be a “rolling” list until May 27 — when the Golden Spikes Award semifinalists are announced — ensuring that athletes can play themselves into consideration for the award throughout the collegiate and high school seasons. 2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 1. Carlos Rodon (NC State)

rodonCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 1 on our Top 100 Countdown is North Carolina State’s Carlos Rodon. The 6-3 left-handed pitcher from Holly Springs, North Carolina was selected in the 16th round by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2011 MLB Draft.

As a freshman in 2012, Rodon had the strongest breakout season in the country for the NC State Wolfpack. In his 17 appearances, Rodon went 9-0 with an ERA of just 1.57. In his 114.2 innings pitched, Rodon struck out 135 batters while walking 41 and holding opponents to a batting average of just .176. Continue reading

Number 2 on our countdown is East Carolina junior Jeff Hoffman. The 6’4 right-handed pitcher from Latham, New York spent his summer playing for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks in the prestigious Cape Cod League.  Continue reading

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 3. Trea Turner (NC State)

turnerCollege Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 3 on our countdown is NC State junior Trea Turner. The 6’1 infielder from Lake Worth, Florida was selected in the 20th round by the Pirates in the 2011 MLB Draft.

As a freshman, Turner played and started in all 63 games for NC State. He posted a batting average of .336 with 13 doubles and 43 RBI. He also had an on base percentage of .432 and 72 runs, which ranked sixth in the nation. In addition, Turner also led the nation in stolen bases as he went 57-for-61. Continue reading

Number 4 on our countdown is Vanderbilt junior RHP Tyler Beede. The Auburn, Massachusetts native graduated from Lawrence Academy after being named a consensus high school All-American. He was selected in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays but decided to head to Vanderbilt to continue his baseball career. Continue reading

Number 5 on our countdown is Cincinnati sophomore outfielder Ian Happ. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native attended Mount Pleasant High School. He was a four-year letter winner where he helped guide the Blue Devils to a top eight finish in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association in 2012. In his high school career, he accumulated a .449 career average with 33 doubles, five triples, 12 home runs and 65 RBIs. Continue reading

Number 6 on the countdown is Hartford junior LHP Sean Newcomb. The Middleboro, Massachusetts native attended Middleboro High School where he went 9-0 with a 0.46 ERA and three saves as a senior in 58 innings pitched. Continue reading
