CBD Column: Pitt Preparing For Next Chapter

Stepping into coach Joe Jordano’s office, you can see that the Pitt Panthers are at a crossroads as a program. On top of his file cabinet stands a plaque that reads “Big East Championship Runner-Up,” a memento from the 2005 season. If you turn to the wall on the far side of the office from the door, you see a picture of Cost Field, Pitt baseball’s brand new facility that sits atop what many familiar with Oakland would call “Cardiac Hill.” Continue reading CBD Column: Pitt Preparing For Next Chapter

SEC Fall Checkin: Vanderbilt

After being eliminated in a close game by NC State in the NCAA Regional early last June, the Commodores are back with something to prove. They bounced back from a 1-7 start in 2011 to finish 35-28, then won six more games in the postseason. This year, with that experience under their belts and an impressive recruiting class, the Commodores are hoping for bigger and better things. Continue reading SEC Fall Checkin: Vanderbilt

SEC Fall Check-In: Georgia

Georgia coach David Perno’s squad saw their ups and downs last season, concluding with a 31-26 record and an 8-seed in the SEC baseball tournament after finishing fifth-best in the East division. The Bulldogs, who entered last season making two regionals in three seasons, missed out on postseason baseball after a combination of inconsistent play and some injuries. But Perno’s squad has added what the coach thinks could be one of the best classes in school history, and the future looks bright in Athens. Continue reading SEC Fall Check-In: Georgia

SEC Fall Check-In: Ole Miss

The Rebels have been knocking on the door for a trip to Omaha for a decade, but their inability to kick the door in has been consistent. That’s what makes last season’s 37-26 campaign almost ordinary in Oxford, Miss., in that the Rebs were sent home by the TCU Horned Frogs in the Texas A&M NCAA regional last season. Ole Miss had the early advantage in the regional, forcing the Horned Frogs to drop a game and entering the regional championship unbeaten. Two consecutive losses to the Horned Frogs sent the Rebels home for the year, and left Ole Miss yet another near-miss in their recent string of “warning track shot” seasons. SEC Fall Check-in: Auburn

The Auburn Tigers returned to the SEC tournament for the third straight season last year, but were quickly bounced after dropping two of their three games in Hoover to the Florida Gators and South Carolina Gamecocks. There’s certainly no shame in losing to two of the more successful programs in the country in recent history, but Auburn has set higher goals for themselves after their fourth consecutive winning season under coach John Pawlowski. SEC Fall Check-In: Mississippi State

The Mississippi State Bulldogs come into the 2013 season in an unfamiliar role. By virtue of taking the 2012 SEC Championship in Hoover, Ala. last season, their first SEC title since 2005, MSU is now the hunted, not the hunter. But even as one of the favorites for this year’s SEC crown, they have unfinished business left over from last year that needs to be taken care of. Continue reading SEC Fall Check-In: Mississippi State
