Western Illinois Leatherneck Baseball hosted their first conference series this weekend against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Rich Mascheri got the start on the mound Friday night and threw a strong 7 1/3 innings striking out nine batters on five hits. The hitters put up 8 hits on five runs but fell short and suffered the loss. Nick Smith and I got the start on the bump on Saturday’s game. I was able to go six innings striking out eight batters on seven hits. Alexander Zarate relieved me in the seventh inning and struck out four batters and gave up two unearned runs in three innings. This weekend Leatherneck baseball took full swing as we brought a 5-11 record into our first home series against the Musketeers of Xavier. This was the first series of a 13-game home stand and we felt we needed to come out and prove a point. Read the rest of this entry »

This past weekend we went to St. Louis to take on St. Louis University and Air Force. I’m going to speak for the whole team and say both games were disappointing. This week was a very exciting time to be associated with the baseball team here at Western Illinois. We jumped on the bus and traveled the 13 hours to Athens, Ga. to take on a perennial SEC powerhouse Georgia. Although we lost the first two games in gut-wrenching fashion, we were able to come back on Sunday and put up a good showing in a 7-4 victory. Read the rest of this entry »

This past weekend we went down to Georgia State and I think I can speak for everyone and say it was a disappointment. I do not think GSU won the series; I think we lost it. As the season approaches the Leathernecks have not been forgotten in the preseason polls. We have been predicted to finish second, and in the past second would have been satisfying. Coach Villano has brought a new swagger to WIU Baseball. New additions to the coaching staff of Shane Davis and Mike Vucsko, have become a great fit for the program to help assist the ball club with Cooper Stewart. Together they have done plenty of remodeling in their time here at Western, and now have the luxury of coaching a team they have built through personal recruitment. The newest crop of freshman added to the squad this fall are ready to make an impact and are just a preview of what is to come. Read the rest of this entry »

With only two weeks left until the season starts we are getting very excited for the upcoming season. All of the freshmen are from the area so we never had the opportunity to play outside until late March. Going down south to play in mid-February will be a really great experience.
