CBD Journal with Western Illinois (May 22nd)

Halfway through the season Coach Villano started sending us video clips and questions to help us understand ourselves and what we were trying to accomplish this season. I will always remember one of the first ones he sent, of a speech by Kirk Cousins of Michigan State. He addressed over and over what a privilege it is to be an athlete and what an honor it is to represent something bigger. I speak for each of my teammates and anyone that competes with Western on their jersey, that it is a privilege to be a Leatherneck. Read the rest of this entry »

Senior Day has now come and gone and we played our last series at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. It was an exciting moment to see all of the seniors you have grown so close with and be able to share that moment with their friends and families. We had stellar performances from two seniors, Rich Mascheri and Dustin Hunter as both threw complete games, while Rich threw a shutout and Dustin recorded 15 strikeouts. Although this season has not gone as we had planned, there are many great things that will be remembered from this season and three great years with the Purple Army. Read the rest of this entry »

This past weekend against North Dakota State was eventful. They are a solid team with talented players. Going into to the series we were looking to put up a fight after losing the series to Southern Utah. Unfortunately we were unable to come out and do that for the first game. Rich Mascheri had a quality start but we were just overmatched in game one. Like all series, the first game is the one that sets the tone for the games to come. In the second game we had an entirely different mindset. Dustin Hunter always gives us his best performance and we got a good one from him, only allowing three earned runs and striking out nine picking up a complete game. This was his first complete game of the season. Offensively, Kedroski continued to drive the ball well. Read the rest of this entry »

Western Illinois Leatherneck Baseball hosted their first conference series this weekend against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Rich Mascheri got the start on the mound Friday night and threw a strong 7 1/3 innings striking out nine batters on five hits. The hitters put up 8 hits on five runs but fell short and suffered the loss. Nick Smith and I got the start on the bump on Saturday’s game. I was able to go six innings striking out eight batters on seven hits. Alexander Zarate relieved me in the seventh inning and struck out four batters and gave up two unearned runs in three innings. This weekend Leatherneck baseball took full swing as we brought a 5-11 record into our first home series against the Musketeers of Xavier. This was the first series of a 13-game home stand and we felt we needed to come out and prove a point. Read the rest of this entry »

This past weekend we went to St. Louis to take on St. Louis University and Air Force. I’m going to speak for the whole team and say both games were disappointing. Intensity was one thing we lacked during this weekend. We need to keep our intensity up the whole game and not let the opposing team have a chance at winning. Read the rest of this entry »

This week was a very exciting time to be associated with the baseball team here at Western Illinois. We jumped on the bus and traveled the 13 hours to Athens, Ga. to take on a perennial SEC powerhouse Georgia. Although we lost the first two games in gut-wrenching fashion, we were able to come back on Sunday and put up a good showing in a 7-4 victory. Read the rest of this entry »

This past weekend we went down to Georgia State and I think I can speak for everyone and say it was a disappointment. I do not think GSU won the series; I think we lost it. We just errors kill us and good teams do not give runs away. Run are hard to come by, especially with the new bats. Read the rest of this entry »

As the season approaches the Leathernecks have not been forgotten in the preseason polls. We have been predicted to finish second, and in the past second would have been satisfying. Coach Villano has brought a new swagger to WIU Baseball. New additions to the coaching staff of Shane Davis and Mike Vucsko, have become a great fit for the program to help assist the ball club with Cooper Stewart. Together they have done plenty of remodeling in their time here at Western, and now have the luxury of coaching a team they have built through personal recruitment. The newest crop of freshman added to the squad this fall are ready to make an impact and are just a preview of what is to come. Read the rest of this entry »

With only two weeks left until the season starts we are getting very excited for the upcoming season. All of the freshmen are from the area so we never had the opportunity to play outside until late March. Going down south to play in mid-February will be a really great experience.
