JMU’S Lowery Receives 2011 Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award

WICHITA, Kan., June 30, 2011 – James Madison junior catcher Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) was selected as the recipient of the 2011 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John’s Pizza on Thursday night at a banquet hosted by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.

The award is handed out annually to the top catcher in all of college baseball and is named in honor of former Major League All-Star, MVP, World Series champion and Hall of Famer Johnny Bench, who was on hand to present the award. Continue reading

Taylor Jungmann wins 2011 Dick Howser Award

OMAHA, Neb. – Texas junior pitcher Taylor Jungmann is the recipient of the 25th annual Dick Howser Trophy, presented by Easton Foundations, as college baseball’s player of the year. The presentation was made Tuesday morning as part of a news conference at TD Ameritrade Park, with several other 2011 national honors being awarded as well.

The 25th anniversary of the Dick Howser Trophy presented by Easton Foundations was even more special by the awarding of this year’s honor at TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha, the new home of the College World Series. Continue reading

2011 Baseball America All-American Teams

DURHAM, N.C.—College Player of the Year Trevor Bauer headlines Baseball America’s 2011 College All-America team.

Even in a year when new bat standards resulted in diminished offense and stronger pitching numbers across the country, Bauer stood out for his mind-boggling strikeout numbers and remarkable consistency. No college pitcher was as utterly dominant as UCLA’s junior righthander, who led the nation with 10 complete games (nine consecutive) and a Pac-10-record 203 strikeouts—52 more than second-place Danny Hultzen. Through super regionals, Bauer also ranked second in the nation in wins and third in ERA. His dominance and talent made him the No. 3 overall pick by the Diamondbacks. Continue reading

NCBWA Announces 2011 Division I All-America Teams

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – After two rounds of voting by the organization, 56 baseball student-athletes comprise the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s 16th Annual All-America first, second and third teams, as announced on Wednesday.

Nineteen different conferences are represented, one independent and 10 conference championships teams. The three All-America squads are also made up of 12 conference players of the year, seven conference pitchers of the year winners and 10 first-round draft picks in the recent Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. The team is headed by Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman Pitcher of The Year RHP Corey Knebel of Texas (17 saves, 1.23 ERA, 57 strikeouts and 12 walks in 51 1/3 innings) and Freshman Player of The Year OF Daniel Aldrich, College of Charleston (.347, 22 homers, 17 doubles and 73 RBI).
