The Leathernecks kept the train rolling in the right direction and won three of four to take its second consecutive series this past weekend, a feat that has not been done since 2008. Finals week is always a challenging and interesting time for student-athletes. Balancing practices, workouts and final exams is something that requires immense focus and organization. I commend all student-athletes for the skills shown on and off the field. Continue reading

Due to the facilities at Southern Utah I was able to be in the dugout instead of a press box. It was an interesting perspective to say the least. It was an important series just like every other Summit League series. The Leathernecks played extremely well and everybody contributed on some level. The Purple & Gold outscored the Thunderbirds 44-17 and ended two of the games early in seven innings. Dating back to last season, Western Illinois has ended three out of the last four games against Southern Utah early. Continue reading

The frustrating season has continued for us Leathernecks. After a series split with Summit League powerhouse Oral Roberts, we traveled to Oakland University and lost three of four. Inconsistency and lack of intensity throughout a full nine innings of play seems to be our Achilles heel. If we are going to pull this season around we need to take every aspect of the game head on, and take them one step at a time. That means we need to play each and every game from here on out one pitch at a time, one out at a time, and one inning at a time. If we cannot do that then our frustrations are destined to continue. At some point in the season, a team needs to become consistent in all phases of the game if they are going to have success. To this point our starting pitching has been pretty solid but we can’t win on starting pitching alone. At some point we are going to need a consistent effort from our bullpen to back up the effort we are getting each weekend from guys like Russell and Sterling. In the first few weeks of the season we were waiting on our bats to heat up so we could really start rollin’ as a team, well we have been hitting the heck out of the ball lately. Tommy Lilja has been big for us all season and continued his success with two homeruns on Sunday (one hit the top of the left field trees). Matt Igara was named Summit League player of the month after leading the league in hits and doubles and John Koszulinki is on a tear these past few months. Continue reading

I thought last weekend’s series against Bradley was a disappointment. We got another solid pitching performance from Dan Russell on Friday night which we let go to waste because we couldn’t find a way to put runs on the board. Saturday, Zach Sterling went out and dealt and got us the win. Sunday was probably our worst game of the year. It’s hard to win when you give teams 5 outs an inning, walk batters, and don’t capitalize at the plate with runners in scoring position. Continue reading

Victories seem to be few and far between for the Leathernecks as we come closer and closer to the opening conference series against South Dakota State. For the most part, it seems like we have been shooting ourselves in the foot. Errors, walks, and giving away free bases have plagued us all season. Offensively, poor situational hitting like failing to get a man in from third with less than two outs has also hurt us. Our pitchers have been working hard, and we have wasted quality starts from both Zach Sterling and Dan Russell. We all know that we can play better than this, and we have had a few bright spots this season. It is time to turn the corner and get this season back on the right track. Continue reading

After a rough start to the season, the leathernecks have seemed to have found a little groove. We have been through some rough games, some that we should have won hands down and some that we could have taken. All season it seemed that we have been looking for someone to step up and take it upon themselves to pull our team out of this slump. This past weekend we had a number of players step to the plate and take that role. It seemed that when these players stepped up, the rest of our team followed. Our record is not a reflection of the talent that we have and I still think that we are going to surprise some teams. Continue reading

The first 2 games of the series weren’t the best, but after digging into ourselves we came into the third game against Indiana State with some fire. After Indiana State made the initial push by ISU, we immediately shoved them right back and out came the Purple Army. Dan Russell pitched absolutely amazing, fighting not only the batters but the cold temperatures as well. Tom Lilja added another home run to his stats, and John Koszulinski came through big time with 5 RBI’s on the game. Everything came together and showed what the Leathernecks are all about, and also how dangerous we can be on both defense and offense. We just now need to keep that fire burning and keep shoving back, and build upon that win and carry it over to our next game and so on. Continue reading
