Florida State edges Vanderbilt to advance to CWS

ShermanJohnsonFSU TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State is going back! For the 20th time in school history, the Seminoles are headed to Omaha. Twelfth-ranked Florida State (47-18) secured a spot in the College World Series with a 7-6 victory over No. 17 Vanderbilt (46-20) Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 4,225 on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.

The Seminoles led throughout but had to hold off a relentless Commodore squad that scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at first. But Mike McGee slammed the door shut striking out Joe Loftus for the final out of the game.

Vanderbilt evens series with Florida State; Deciding Game on Sunday

SonnyGrayVandy TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— Vanderbilt right-hander Sonny Gray and left-hander Grayson Garvin limited Florida State to just two runs on 10 hits in a 6-2 win Saturday afternoon in the second game of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium.

The win evened the series for the Commodores (46-19), who will now face the Seminoles (46-18) in the deciding game tomorrow at Noon CT/1 p.m. ET. The winner advances to the College World Series in Omaha next week, while the loser’s season will come to an end.

McGee gives FSU 9-8 Walk-off win over Vanderbilt

MikeMcGeeFSU TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Twelfth-ranked Florida State (46-17) opened the Tallahassee Super Regional in walk-off fashion Friday afternoon thanks in large part to Mike McGee’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Seminoles a 9-8 victory over No. 17 Vanderbilt (45-19) in game one of a best-of-three games series.

With two outs and the game tied at eight in the bottom of the ninth, McGee stepped in and took a 0-1 pitch from Vanderbilt’s Chase Reid (4-2) over the fence in right center for his third game-winning hit of the season and second walk-off home run. It marked his third career walk-off home run, while the Port St. Lucie, Fla., has had the deciding hit in three of FSU’s four walk-off victories this year.

Super Regional Preview: Vanderbilt at Florida State

Gilmartin The Vanderbilt Commodores head down to Tallahassee to take on the Florida State Seminoles as both squads are looking to head to Omaha this season. The Commodores enter the weekend with a 45-18 overall record after going 4-1 in the Louisville Regional. They opened the Regional with a victory over Illious State 8-7 (13 innings) before dropping a 7-1 decision to Louisville. They proceeded to go on a three game winning streak with another victory over Illinois State (10-4) before defeating Louisville twice (7-0 and 3-2 10 innings) to qualify for the Super Regionals. The Florida State Seminoles enter with a 45-17 overall record after going a perfect 3-0 in the Norwich (CT) Regional. They defeated Central Connecticut State in the opener 11-3 (Full Recap) before defeating Oregon twice by scores of 6-4 (Full Recap) and 5-3. (Full Recap).
