Zags drop two games to OK State

STILLWATER, Okla., (http://www.gozags.com Feb. 24, 2008) The Gonzaga University baseball team was unable to avoid a sweep by No. 27 Oklahoma State University Sunday, dropping both games of a doubleheader. In the first game of the twin bill, the Zags’ fell to the Cowboys 3-1 before dropping a 10-3 decision in game two.

GU (0-4) starter Matt Fields (0-1) suffered the loss in the opening game of the twin bill as the junior went seven innings allowing three runs on seven hits with one strikeout. Continue reading Zags drop two games to OK State

Cowboys pick up 6-1 victory over Zags

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State opened its 2008 season with a 6-1 win over Gonzaga Friday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

CSTV previews WAC and WCC

CSTV continues their series of previews with the West Coast Conference and the WAC. Sorensen picks San Diego to win the West Coast Conference with Pepperdine as a contender and Santa Clara is the darkhorse. The preview is available here. 2008 Gonzaga Team Preview

Spokane, Wash. After a disappointing end to an otherwise impressive 2007 campaign, the Gonzaga University baseball team is looking toward another strong run this season. Last year the Bulldogs enjoyed one of the most memorable seasons in the program’s history, including a 33-25 overall record. 2008 Rivals All-American Team

Rivals national baseball writer Kendall Rogers has put out his 2008 All-American Team which is led by Pedro Alvarez of Vanderbilt. Buster Posey of FSU is named to the first team catcher’s spot in only his second year behind the plate. Miami slugger Yonder Alonso beat out Justin Smoak for the first base position. Filling out the rest of the infield is 2B Blake Stouffer of Texas A&M, Ryan Flaherty and Pedro Alvarez of Vanderbilt. The outfield is Dominic de la Osa of Vanderbilt, Kyle Russell of Texas, and Tommy Baldridge of Coastal Carolina. Brett Wallace of Arizona State picks up the DH spot while Zach Putnam of Michigan is listed as the Utility player. The starting pitchers are Jacob Thompson of Virginia, Preston Guilmet of Arizona, Brian Matusz of San Diego and Lance Lynn of Ole Miss. The relief pitchers are led by switch-pitcher Pat Venditte of Creighton and Cole St. Clair of Rice. The full team with break downs on each player is available here.

2008 San Diego Season Preview

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 2008 University of San Diego baseball season will be much like a new season of a popular television series. Each season, a television show has the same name and airs on the same network but often introduces new characters and new storylines. While the premise and main characters of the show remain the same from year to year, each season is filled with new adventures, new drama and a whole lot of entertainment. 2008 WCC Preseason Poll

The West Coast Conference announced the 2008 Preseason Conference Poll as selected by the coaches. San Diego is selected to finish in first place as they received seven out of a possible eight first place votes with Santa Clara getting the other one. Pepperdine comes in second place followed by Santa Clara in third place. The conference should be decided by these three schools as they all return veteran squads. The rest of the poll is filled with LMU, Gonzaga, San Francisco, Portland, and St. Mary’s. The full press release is available by clicking here.

USD Ranked 5th in Rivals Preseason Poll

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego baseball team has been ranked No. 5 in the Rivals.com preseason top-25 poll it was announced Monday morning. This marks the highest preseason ranking in the history of the program.

San Diego is coming off the heals of the best season in program history with a 43-18 record, the first 40-win season in the history of USD baseball. The Toreros won their third West Coast Conference championship, received a program-best No. 4 national ranking and a program-first No. 8 national seed in the NCAA Regionals. Doug Kroll’s Top Freshmen

CSTV editor Doug Kroll checks in with an article previewing the top freshmen in the country. He ranks Matt Harvey of North Carolina as the best freshmen entering the season. Harvey was rated as a first round pick before the 2007 MLB Draft but his stock slipped when his ties with Scott Boras came up.
