DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball and the Cuban Baseball Federation announced on Wednesday that the two international baseball powers will continue their home-and-home international friendship series in the U.S. this July. 2015 will mark the fourth consecutive year the two countries have met on the baseball diamond for a five-game series. DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball officially named St. John’s University head coach, Ed Blankmeyer, as the manager for the 2015 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team on Tuesday. Blankmeyer previously served as an assistant coach on the 2010 Collegiate National Team that posted a 16-3 record and captured the silver medal at the FISU World University Baseball Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

New Mexico head coach Ray Birmingham and LSU shortstop Alex Bregman both spent the summer as members of the USA Collegiate National Team. Birmingham served as an assistant coach this summer while Bregman served as the everyday shortstop. Bregman and Birmingham though had a connection together as Bregman is from New Mexico. MATANZAS, Cuba – Chris Okey (Clemson) launched a pinch-hit home run and Alex Bregman had two hits and a pair of RBIs but it wasn’t enough as the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team dropped its series-opening contest to Cuba, 4-3, in front of 10,500 rowdy fans at Victoria de Giron Stadium on Thursday.
“I thought tonight was a well-played ball game by two talented teams,” Team USA manager Dave Van Horn (Arkansas) said. “Cuba just pitched a little bit better than us today and took advantage of a couple of opportunities we presented to them. It was a really fun atmosphere out there this evening and we are looking forward to getting back out there again.
