Top 100 Countdown: 3. Deven Marrero (Arizona State)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 3 with Arizona State junior shortstop Deven Marrero. The Davie, Florida native attended American Heritage High School where he was a two time captain. He was also named All-State and All-County in 2008, when American Heritage won both the Florida State title and the National title. He ended up being drafted in the 17th round (509th overall) by the Cincinnati Reds during the 2009 MLB Draft. He decided to turn down the Reds offer to head to Tempe, Arizona to play for the Arizona State Sun Devils. Read the rest of this entry »

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 6 with Duke junior RHP Marcus Stroman. The Medford, New York native attended Patchogue-Medford High School where he was a four year letter winner. He went 9-1 as a senior with a 0.25 ERA and 120 strikeouts while hitting .350 with six homers and 22 stolen bases. His junior season saw him go 7-2 on the mound with a 1.20 ERA and 96 strikeouts while batting .410 with a pair of homers and 30 steals. He was named Louisville Slugger’s Player of the Year and earning the Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the state of New York. He also won the Paul Gibson Award, which goes to the top pitcher on Long Island. He was selected in the 18th round (532nd overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals but decided to head to Duke. Read the rest of this entry »

We continue the countdown today at number 8 with Miami (FL) catcher Peter O’Brien. He is from Miami Gardens, Florida where he attended Braddock High School. He decided to attend MEAC school Bethune-Cookman. As a freshman in 2009, he appeared in 50 games (39 starts) while hitting .314 with four homers and driving in 30 runs. College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 11 with Florida two way player Brian Johnson. The Cocoa Beach, Florida native had an outstanding high school career at Cocoa Beach High School. During his senior campaign in 2009, he went 5-1 with four complete games and a 0.76 ERA in 55 innings. He was also solid at the plate hitting .551 with 25 runs, 21 RBI and nine homers. He earned first-team all-state recognition in Class 4A and was the All-Space Coast Most Valuable Player for his great senior season. Johnson was ranked the 84th best high school prospect by Baseball America heading into the 2009 MLB Draft. He ended up being selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 27th round but could not come to an agreement with them. Read the rest of this entry »

We continue the countdown today at number 17 with Alabama senior Taylor Dugas, The Lafayette, Louisiana, native attended Teurlings Catholic High School where he was a four year starter for head coach Mike Thibodeaux. In his high school career, he batted .518 (176 for 340) with 19 home runs and 159 RBI. His senior season saw him hit .640 (57 for 86) with 10 home runs, 38 RBI, 55 runs, 17 doubles and four triples while being named a Collegiate Baseball High School All-American, LBCA Player of the Year, first-team All-State by the LBCA, and won the Rebel of the Year Award at TCHS. We continue the countdown today at number 22 with Virginia junior RHP Branden Kline. The Frederick, Maryland native attended Governor Thomas Johnson High School. As a senior, he had 0.51 ERA in 41 innings while striking out 79 while walking 12. He picked up several honors including being named First-Team All-State, All-Metro, Monocacy Valley Athletics Conference Pitcher of the Year and Frederick County Player of the Year. He was selected in the sixth round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Boston Red Sox but decided to head to Virginia to continue his baseball career. Read the rest of this entry »

As a senior, he went  9-2 with a 3.12 ERA while recording 88 strikeouts and 14 walks. We continue the countdown today at number 45 with TCU junior catcher/outfielder Josh Elander. The Round Rock, Texas native attended Round Rock High School where he was a four year letter winner. As a senior, he picked up several awards including being named District 16-5A Most Valuable Player as a senior, first-team all-state, first-team all-Central Texas and an Under Armour All-American as a junior and senior. Oregon’s George Horton added to 2012 USA Collegiate National Team Coaching Staff

DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball has announced that Oregon baseball coach George Horton has been named to the 2012 Collegiate National Team coaching staff. The Ducks skipper will serve as an assistant coach under manager — and new Tennessee Volunteers head coach — Dave Serrano.

“We have long admired George’s work at Cal State Fullerton and Oregon, and we are excited to name him to a Collegiate National Team coaching staff,” said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball’s general manager of National Teams. “George’s energy and leadership will be a welcome addition to Dave Serrano’s staff.” Read the rest of this entry »
