2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 44. Hunter Cole (Georgia)

Baseball Media Photos 2013 SeasonWe continue the countdown today with number 44, Georgia outfielder Hunter Cole. During his sophomore campaign with the Bulldogs, Cole made starts in all three outfield positions and was one of only two Bulldogs to start in all 53 games in 2013. The 6’1” outfielder batted .303 with four home runs and 33 RBI in 2013 and was among the top hitters on an always dangerous Bulldog lineup. His talent wasn’t confined to the diamond as Cole was also named to the 2013 UGA Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll and to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Continue reading

Louisville Baseball HeadshotsWe continue the countdown today with number 45, Louisville RHP Kyle Funkhouser. In his freshman campaign with the Cardinals, Funkhouser quickly became one of the elite pitchers in the Big East. The 6’2” right-hander was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American after going 5-1 with a 2.14 ERA. In 54.2 innings pitched, Funkhouser made a total of 22 appearances on the mound, including six starts collecting 54 strikeouts in the process. Continue reading

2014 CBD Top 100 Players: 48. Kyle Wilcox (Bryant)

KyleWilcox2We continue the countdown today with number 48, Bryant RHP Kyle Wilcox. In his freshman campaign with the Bulldogs, Wilcox proved that he had what it took to perform at the Division 1 level. With a fastball that topped out at 97 mph during 2013, the right hander quickly became a player of interest within the NEC. Wilcox appeared in 15 games out of the bullpen for the Black and Gold, throwing in 13 innings while posting a 6.23 ERA. Despite starting off shaky in his first appearance, the freshman responded with countless scoreless innings holding opponents to a .269 average. Continue reading

2014 CBD Top Players: 49. Nathan Kirby (Virginia)

NathanKirbyWe continue the countdown today with number 49, Virginia LHP Nathan Kirby. In a stellar freshman campaign with the Cavaliers, Kirby was fourth on the staff by appearing in 24 games with 32.2 innings pitched. During the 2013 season the south paw pitched to a 4-1 record posting a 6.06 ERA and showed great command of the zone only allowing 13 walks the entire season. Kirby had the opportunity to start in two games but found success coming out of the bullpen for the Cavaliers, throwing countless shutout innings in 2013. Continue reading

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 55. Branden Cogswell (Virginia)

BrandenCogswellUVAWe continue the countdown today with number 55, Virginia shortstop Branden Cogswell. In his sophomore campaign with the Cavaliers, Cogswell found himself at the top of the lineup where he started the first 47 games. In 182 at bats, the rising junior posted an impressive .346 average with 63 hits, 55 runs and 22 RBI. The 6’2” infielder recorded 20 multiple hit games despite missing the last 15 games due to an injury. Cogswell played a huge part in the Cavaliers success in 2013 and his efforts on the diamond got him selected to the Second-Team All-ACC as well as named to the watch list for the Wallace Award which is given to the nation’s top shortstop. AdamDianTempleWe continue the countdown today with number 58, Temple RHP Adam Dian. In his sophomore campaign with the Owls, Dian appeared in 11 games, allowing only 17 hits and six walks. The right-hander pitched 19.1 innings and posted a 2.65 ERA with 19 strikeouts. With potential to play at the next level, Dian has a solid pitchers build standing at 6’4” 225 pounds. His power arm has him on many people’s watch lists as the 2014 season approaches. Continue reading

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 59. Mike Papi (Virginia)

MikePapiWe continue the countdown today with number 59, Virginia OF/1B Mike Papi. In his sophomore season with the Cavaliers, Papi worked his way into the lineup starting 47 of the 55 games he played in. The 6’3” outfielder was named the ACC’s 2013 batting champion with an impressive .381 average and also led the league in on-base percentage (.517) and finished second in slugging (.619). Papi was a threat at the plate, reaching base safely in 47 of the 55 games. The First Team All-American was also named to the All-ACC First Team and earned an invitation to compete for a spot on the 2013 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Continue reading

CBD Top 100 Countdown: 60. Kevin Newman (Arizona)

KevinNewmanWe continue the countdown today with number 60, Arizona SS Kevin Newman. In his freshman campaign with the Wildcats, Newman was named the starting shortstop and played in all 55 games in the 2013 schedule. The slick handed infielder finished an impressive rookie season with a .336 batting average which was good for 4th on the team and No. 11 in the PAC-12. Newman also collected 73 hits and 42 RBI which was good for 3rd in the Wildcats lineup. Defensively, Newman had an outstanding season as a rookie. He finished the 2013 season with a .975 fielding percentage and collected a team-leading 164 assists and helped the Wildcats turn 45 double plays. Additionally, Newman was the only freshman position player named to the PAC-12 All-Conference team. Continue reading
