NCBWA Names National Players of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending February 26, today. Wichita State junior first baseman Johnny Coy was named National Hitter of the Week, while Appalachian State senior right-hander Ryan Arrowood was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

USA Baseball Releases 2012 Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List

(DURHAM, N.C.) — USA Baseball announced its preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List Thursday, marking the organization’s first step toward identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country. Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2012 for the 35th time.

South Carolina’s Chad Holbrook named the 2011 ABCA/Baseball America Assistant Coach of the Year

Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina associate head baseball coach Chad Holbrook has been named the 2011 American Baseball Coaches Association/Baseball America Assistant Coach of the Year. Now in his fourth season as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the baseball program, Holbrook serves as hitting instructor, oversees the Gamecock offense, including base running and the short game, and is the third base coach. CBI Unveils Tom Walter College Baseball Inspiration Award

RICHMOND, Va. – Before the first pitch of the 2011 college baseball season, Wake Forest coach Tom Walter registered a save.

After an early-season practice, Walter surprised his team when he told his Demon Deacons that he was going to donate a kidney to freshman outfielder Kevin Jordan. A week later, Walter underwent surgery to remove his kidney, which was transplanted to Jordan. Continue reading

UCLA’s Trevor Bauer wins 2011 Golden Spikes Award

JMU’S Lowery Receives 2011 Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award

WICHITA, Kan., June 30, 2011 – James Madison junior catcher Jake Lowery (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) was selected as the recipient of the 2011 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award delivered by Papa John’s Pizza on Thursday night at a banquet hosted by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.

The award is handed out annually to the top catcher in all of college baseball and is named in honor of former Major League All-Star, MVP, World Series champion and Hall of Famer Johnny Bench, who was on hand to present the award. Continue reading

Taylor Jungmann wins 2011 Dick Howser Award

OMAHA, Neb. – Texas junior pitcher Taylor Jungmann is the recipient of the 25th annual Dick Howser Trophy, presented by Easton Foundations, as college baseball’s player of the year. The presentation was made Tuesday morning as part of a news conference at TD Ameritrade Park, with several other 2011 national honors being awarded as well.

The 25th anniversary of the Dick Howser Trophy presented by Easton Foundations was even more special by the awarding of this year’s honor at TD Ameritrade Stadium in downtown Omaha, the new home of the College World Series. Continue reading

2011 Dick Howser Trophy Finalists Announced

OMAHA, Neb. – Two standouts who led their teams to the 2011 NCAA World Series and the Pacific-10 Conference season strikeout record-holder have been named as finalists for the 2011 Dick Howser Trophy presented by Easton Foundations in balloting by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in conjunction with the College Baseball Foundation, the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce. 2011 NCBWA Division I Freshman All-American Team

LYNCHBURG, VA. (NCBWA) – A total of 34 standout freshmen college baseball players from every part of the country are featured on the 2011 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American Team, the organization announced today.

The 2011 NCBWA Freshman All-American Team features players from 17 conferences and seven conference championship teams. The two All-American squads are also made up of 14 conference “Rookie of the Year” winners. Continue reading
