The CBB has been previewing some of the top players in the country for the 2008 season throughout this off-season. This week we check in on the top freshmen in the country.
Derek Dietrich SS/P (Georgia Tech)
Derek Dietrich is a 6’1 199 pound shortstop/pitcher out of Parma OH. He was a third round pick by the Houston Astros in 2007 but elected to enroll at Georgia Tech after failing to come to terms on a contract. Continue reading

Rivals also posted a new article about the BYU Cougars. They will be returning 4 significant players from last year team but are getting a ton of players back from the missions which are required at BYU. The full preview about the Cougars of BYU is available here.
The Associated Press wrote a recent article about Tony Gwynn, the current Head Coach of San Diego State. He discusses the upcoming Hall of Fame voting in which he is probably going to be inducted to this year. He also talks about the expectations at SDSU of getting to a regional where his team has not been in over 15 seasons. The full article is available here.
The University of Utah Utes are preparing for the upcoming season. The first practice for the Ute squad will be Monday and the first game is on Feb. 2nd at Santa Clara. The full press release about them preparing for the season is available here. The full schedule is also available here.
The Indiana Hoosiers have started up a series of press releases about the newcomers to the program. The first player showcased is Tom Devero. They also have added a preview with Matt Bashore which can also be read.
The Hoosiers open the season on Feb. 23rd against Troy and the full schedule is able to be viewed here.
The 2007 Signing period has started for College Baseball. The Boston College Eagles have signed 13 players including nine student-athletes from Massachusetts or Connecticut. This is a sign that Aoki will be focusing on dominating the recruiting trail with New England kids attending BC. We have a bunch of press releases on the rest of the country.
BYU has released their schedule for the 2007 season. They are involved in the Service Academy Classic in Millington, TN. They also will be playing Pac 10 teams Washington and Washington State for quick two-game sets. They visit Pullman and the Huskies will be heading to Provo to face the Cougars.

The USA National Team swept a doubleheader from Puerto Rico and the Czech Republic. The United States won the morning game against Puerto Rico by a score of 15-0. Nick Schmidt pitched 5 shutout innings giving up only two hits. Sean Doolittle pitched two perfect innings to end the mercy ruled game. J.P. Arencibia led the offense by driving in five runs and getting three hits.
The late afternoon game was against the Czech Republic. The Czechs were overmatched from the great pitching of Jake Arrieta in the 16-0 victory. Jake gave up the only hit of the game in the fifth inning which was his last inning of work. Tim Federowicz finished the game which was ended early because of the mercy rule again. Brandon Crawford led the USA offense with a 3-3 performance with 4 RBI and four runs scored.
The USA team will play Mexico on Thursday night at 8:45 pm.
