West Coast Championship Series PPD

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference baseball Championship Series scheduled between No. 7 University of San Diego and No. 13 Pepperdine University for Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. has been postponed due to inclement weather in the San Diego area. The two teams will now play a double-header on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.. Game two will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.

Six Zags Record Multiple-Hits In 7-4 Victory
Los Angeles, Calif. – The bottom four batters in Gonzaga University’s line-up accounted for 10 of the Bulldogs’ 14 hits Friday as the Zags posted a 7-4 victory over Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Tyson Van Winkle led GU at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and one run scored. The game was the opening contest of a three-game West Coast Conference series with the Lions.

With two games remaining in the season, Gonzaga (29-22 overall, 9-9 WCC) is now one game short of 30-wins. Should the Zags hit the mark, it would mark the second consecutive season with 30-plus wins. It would also mark the first time in27 years that GU has won 30 or more games to back-to-back years. Gonzaga last accomplished the feat during the 1981 and 1982 seasons.

Bulldog starter Matt Fields (8-3) posted an impressive outing to earn the win. The junior threw a perfect game through four innings and did not surrender a hit until the sixth inning, as Fields finished the contest allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out seven over 7.2 innings. CJ McClure earned his second save of the season for GU, allowing only one hit during the final 1.1 frames of the game. LMU (22-31 overall, 6-13 WCC) starter Martin Viramontes (3-6) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits, seven walks, over 6.0 innings.

With the win Cal takes the series victory from their across the bay rivals. Craig Bennigson picks up the win and throws 6 innings, gives up 1 earned run, walks 2, strikes out 4 and gives up 7 hits. Jeff Kobernus was the most prolific hitter going 3 for 4 with 2 critical Golden Bear RBI’s. Erik Davis takes the loss after throwing 7.2 innings, giving up 6 hits, 5 earned runs, walks 4 and strikes out 7.

Charles Brewer gets his 7 victory for UCLA after throwing 7.1 innings, giving up 5 hits, 2 earned runs, walking 5 but striking out 9. Cody Decker was the designated hitter for the Bruins and accomplished that going 2 for 5 with a home run and 4 RBI’s. Tanner Robles started for O,SU but only lasted 0.2 of an inning facing just 6 batters allowing 2 hits, 3 runs, walking 2 and striking out just 1. Continue reading

USA Baseball Announces Initial 2008 National Team Trials Roster

(DURHAM, N.C.) – USA Baseball announced today its initial list of 12 collegiate players who have accepted invitations for the 2008 National Team Trials held June 11-23 throughout the northeast and southeast United States. The list is comprised of eight sophomores and four freshmen. In all, 32 players will be invited to the National Team Trials with 22 of those players being selected for the National Team roster. USF Falls to St. Mary’s

SAN FRANCISCO – Senior Matt Lieb homered and San Francisco had the winning run on first base in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn’t come all the way back, as the Dons (29-21) fall to Saint Mary’s 6-5 in non-conference action at Benedetti Diamond on Wednesday afternoon. The Gaels (23-23-1) evened the season series with USF at two games a piece.

Down 6-4 in the bottom of the ninth, USF forged a two out rally, started by Lieb’s pinch hit homerun to right field. Junior third baseman Zach Kim walked and Railey singled to put runners at the corners, but freshman designated hitter Connor Bernatz grounded out to second base to end the threat and the game, 6-5. LAS VEGAS, Nev.Cal State Northridge (21-25) rode a wave of offense to its 21st victory Wednesday, notching three consecutive doubles in the fourth and cruising to a 4-2 victory over UNLV (20-24). The Northridge pitching effort returned to form behind a strong start from Drew Muren, who tossed five shutout frames before handing off to Davin Tate and the rest of the bullpen.

Muren wrapped us his first career shutout appearance in the fifth by facing just four batters and also posted two perfect innings. The freshman right-hander only got into any real trouble in the second, when Jesse Wight smacked a leadoff double for the Rebels. Muren, however, promptly picked him off and struck out the second man of the inning. Muren then surrendered a single and a walk before getting a fly out to finish the inning. Continue reading

Pecina Dominates with 5-3 Win Over UCLA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Junior left-hander Ricardo Pecina tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts and senior second baseman Kevin Hansen recorded his first collegiate home run to help lead the eighth-ranked University of san Diego baseball team to a 5-3 win over UCLA Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Pecina (5-2) pickup the win on the mound for the Toreros has he came on in relief in the first inning and allowed no runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work. AJ Griffin recorded his 12th save of the season as he allowed no runs on one hit in 2.2 innings of work.

Titans Shut Down Waves, 9-1
Fullerton, Calif.Erik Komatsu and Jared Clark each had 3 hits and drove in a pair of runs Tuesday night to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 9-1 non-conference baseball victory over visiting Pepperdine.

The Titans improved to 30-16 and reached the 30-win mark for the 34th time in their 34-year Div. I history while Pepperdine fell to 28-16. Fullerton‘s win avenged a 13-2 loss in Malibu on March 18 to lefthander Robert Dickmann (3-5), who took the loss Tuesday after allowing 4 runs in 4 innings.

Freshman lefthander Kevin Rath (1-0) picked up his first collegiate victory after allowing only 1 run and 4 hits in 4 innings. Michael Morrison (3 IP), Jason Dovel (1 IP) and Ryan Ackland (1 IP) combined to pitch 5 innings of scoreless relief. The Titans turned three double plays and Rath picked off a pair of runners to thwart the Waves’ offense.

Fresno State ventured to Long Beach, CA to take on the Long Beach State Dirtbags in a non-conference game. The Bulldogs fell 2-1 on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs and Dirtbags combined to use 15 pitchers in the game with no pitcher recording more than three innings of work. The Dogs recorded five hits but scored their only run in the top of the ninth. The Dirtbags scored in the second and the deciding run in the fourth. The Bulldogs fall to 28-24 overall while LBSU improves to 28-17.
