The MLB Signing Deadline is fast approaching as all teams have until midnight on August 15th to sign their prospects or they will head to college. Here is the latest news and notes from around the country.
Bubba Starling’s career with the Nebraska Cornhuskers on the football field is on hold right now according to Huskers head football coach Bo Pelini in the Omaha-World Herald. Starling was selected by Kansas City Royals with the fifth overall pick and is being advised by Scott Boras. If he does not sign with the Royals, Starling will get back on the practice field with the Nebraska football program and will not be able to sign with a MLB team until the 2014 MLB Draft. Mervyl Melendez named head coach at Alabama State

LA Tech Seniors Will Alvis and Joey Ford go out in Style
Louisiana Tech swept a doubleheader from Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday night by scores of 15-1 and 5-4. The victories were not the story on the evening as Louisiana Tech honored their six seniors including Will Alvis and Joey Ford. Both Alvis and Ford completed a rare feat in the game playing all nine positions during the second game of the doubleheader including Alvis pitching a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his second save of the year. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. Conference USA Weekend Recap (April 1st-3rd)

Conference USA’s second weekend of conference play was marked by impressive performances by the top three teams, with each sweeping their series. Houston (15-14, 3-0) sits atop the standings after a series sweep of Tulane (18-10, 1-5), #28 Southern Miss (22-5, 5-1) is in second after taking all three at UCF (19-9,2-4), and #25 Rice finished the trifecta by blanking Marshall (10-16, 1-5).
