Last weekend I attended the Texas vs. Texas State fall scrimmage. Texas had played the previous day against Lamar and lost a rain-shortened scrimmage. Texas State, a new member of the Sun Belt conference, travelled 30 miles north to Austin to take on the Longhorns.
Fall games are a little different than the regular season in that the coaches are really trying to see all of the guys play in a game situation, so I saw a Texas lineup that featured 3 designated hitters and a Texas State pitching rotation that featured 12 pitchers in 12 innings. Continue reading

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Cody Stubbs singled with the bases loaded in the 13th inning to help No. 1 overall seed North Carolina avoid a huge upset by edging Florida Atlantic 12-11 on Monday night in a wild regional championship game.
Stubbs’ hit scored Landon Lassiter from third to cap a game filled with momentum swings, sending the Tar Heels (55-9) spilling onto the field in a mad dash to celebrate. Continue reading

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Brandon Brown drew a bases-loaded, walk-off walk in the ninth to cap a four-run inning as Troy defeated Alabama 9-8 in an elimination game at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional on Sunday.
No. 26 Troy (42-19) moves on to face No.9 Florida State on Sunday at 4 p.m. (CDT) in the Tallahassee Regional Championship at Dick Howser Stadium. The Trojans (42-19) will have to defeat the Seminoles (46-15) twice to advance to next week’s Super Regional. Continue reading

Starkville, Miss. – Facing elimination yet again, the Central Arkansas Bears did what they have done so well over the past week and a half, staring the end of their season in the face and refusing to give in. The fourth-seeded Bears rode an outstanding performance from true freshman Connor Gilmore to a 3-0 win over the second-seeded South Alabama Jaguars, eliminating the Jags and surviving for a rematch against top-seeded Mississippi State. Florida Atlantic 6 Towson 5
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Senior Corey Keller took his turn at leading No. 23 Florida Atlantic University’s baseball team to a thrilling 6-5 victory over Towson to advance at the Chapel Hill Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
The two teams exchanged the lead three times and were tied twice. Geoff Jimenez was hit by a pitch to start the ninth inning, with the score tied at five. He stole second and moved to third on a deep fly to center field by senior first baseman Mark Nelson. Towson elected to walk Brendon Sanger to get to Keller, who had a homerun earlier in the day. Keller belted a double to left to score the game-winning run. On the day, Keller was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Continue reading

Starkville, Miss. – Playing in their sixth elimination game in the past eight days, the Central Arkansas Bears showed that the threat of neither elimination nor rain was enough to put them away. The fourth-seeded Bears overcame a rain delay and a comeback attempt to win their first ever NCAA tournament game, defeating the third-seeded Mercer Bears by a final score of 6-5 in eleven innings to keep their season alive for at least one more day. BOCA RATON, FL – Florida Atlantic University’s baseball team, ranked No. 23 nationally by Baseball America, used the strong arm Austin Gomber, who moved to 8-4 on the season, and the hot bats of seniors Nathan Pittman and Corey Keller to defeat Canisius 14-6 in Saturday’s elimination game of the Chapel Hill NCAA Tournament. The victory improved FAU’s record to 40-21 on the season, the fourth time in 10 seasons and the first under the direction of Head Coach John McCormack that the Owls have posted at least 40 wins.
