CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team opened the 2014 NCAA Tournament with a 10-1 victory over Bucknell in the Charlottesville Regional Friday (May 30) at Davenport Field.

One of the most tested teams in the tournament, Virginia (44-13) has played nine teams that made it to this spring’s field of 64. Ranked between from three to four in the national polls, Brian O’Connor’s team has been impressive, but saw their bid for the ACC title get cut short with a 6-4 loss to FSU on Saturday. Army baseball has announced that they are doing a national search for a new head coach after Matt Reid served as the Interim Head Coach for the 2015 season. Reid took over the program on September 24th, 2013 when Joe Sottolano was given his walking papers. The Black Knights had a solid season going 33-18 and 15-5 in Patriot League play. CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – For the second straight season, there is a tie at the top of the Patriot League Baseball preseason poll as both Army and Navy shared the top spot in the rankings announced on Thursday.
The Black Knights and Mids were even with 42 points apiece, with Army garnering five first-place votes to three for the Navy. Holy Cross was not far behind with 35 points and a pair of first-place votes, while Bucknell took home 31 points and the remaining two first-place votes followed by Lehigh (17) and Lafayette (13). ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy baseball head coach Paul Kostacopoulos announced his team’s 2014 schedule on Thursday. A season-opening series at Florida A&M and the annual Freedom Classic in Kinston, N.C., highlight Navy’s non-conference schedule. WEST POINT, N.Y. – Fifty-two regular season games, including 21 at Doubleday Field at Johnson Stadium, highlight the 2014 Army baseball schedule, announced today by interim head coach Matt Reid.

The Army, Navy, and Air Force baseball programs have been forced to stop fall competitions with the federal government shutting down all intercollegiate activities at the service academies. This weekend’s football games between Navy and Air Force and the Army at Boston College are both unlikely to happen unless the government shutdown is resolved in the very near future.

Update #1: College Baseball Daily has learned that Joe Sottolano was let go for “sexual misconduct” according to several sources. It did not involve any current Army students.
College Baseball Daily has learned that Army has fired Joe Sottolano for a “pattern of behavior” according to a press release from the academy. Sottolano had been coaching at West Point since 1992 becoming the head coach in 2000. He has a career record of 391-286-5 in his 13 years as the head coach.
