SoCal Roundup: Rain, Rain Go Away

“Rain! Rain! Go away! Don’t ever come back until baseball season is over.” (or something like that)

Instead of an exciting matchup between USC and Cal Poly or some tripleheader USD Tournament action, all there was to do in Los Angeles tonight was listen and watch games online since everything in Southern California was cancelled on Friday.

There still were some great games played by some SoCal squads. Could James Kaprielian overcome UCLA’s struggling offense? How would Thomas Eshelman respond after struggling his last outing?

And those teams might be the lucky ones as Southern California is being beset with rain that threatens to wipe out several scheduled games around the area.

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 9. Kyle Freeland (Evansville)

2014 Missouri Valley Preseason Coaches Poll Released

MVC_thumb.jpgST. LOUIS – Wichita State, which returns its entire weekend pitching rotation and a wealth of depth from last year’s squad, has been tabbed as the league favorite in the annual coaches’ preseason poll, receiving six of eight first-place votes.

The Shockers tallied 56 points and were a slim favorite over second-place pick Missouri State (55 points), as the Bears tallied the two remaining first-place votes. Continue reading

Wichita State releases 2014 Schedule

WichitaStateLogo_thumb.jpgWICHITA, Kan. – The 2014 Wichita State baseball schedule features 16 games against 2013 NCAA Tournament teams along with 30 home games, head coach Todd Butler announced Jan. 9.
“We are playing an outstanding non-conference schedule,” Butler said. “The conference alone is going to be tough and I’m excited about it. We will continue to play the best non-conference schedule we can play. I also think it’s great that we are playing Missouri at Kauffman Stadium. I think it will be great for both fan bases, it will be fun for our players and we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the national championship team.” Continue reading

2014 CBD Top 100 Players Countdown: 50. Casey Gillaspie (Wichita State)

GillaspieWichitaStateWe continue the countdown today with number 50, Wichita State first baseman Casey Gillaspie. In his sophomore season with the Shockers, Gillaspie started 62 games at first base, three at DH and one in right field as he played a huge role in the success of the program. In 66 games the 6’4” switch hitter posted a .299 average with 49 runs, 70 hits, 16 doubles, 11 HR, 46 RBI and 62 walks. His efforts on the field got him named to the second team All-Valley as well as the Valley all-defensive team. Continue reading

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 56. Sam Coonrod (Southern Illinois)

SamCoonrodWe continue the countdown today with number #56, Southern Illinois RHP Sam Coonrod. In his sophomore campaign with the Salukis, Coonrod showed dominance on the mound, proving that he had the stuff to be an elite starting pitcher in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). The 6’1” right-hander made 15 starts during the 2013 season and recorded 79.2 innings which was good for 10th in the MVC. Coonrod quickly filled a weekend starting spot and it was for good reason. The sophomore pitched to a 4.29 ERA and finished 8th in the conference with 68 strikeouts. Coonrod finished the Salukis 2013 season with a 3-6 record and also received the Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award for his hard work in the classroom. Continue reading

2014 CBD Top 100 Countdown: 62. Tate Matheny (Missouri State)

TateMathenyWe continue the countdown today with number 62, Missouri State outfielder Tate Matheny. In his freshman campaign with the Bears, Matheny quickly became a standout as he wasted no time making an impact in the field and at the plate. The 6’0” outfielder played in all 54 games for the Bears and during that time was able to lead the team in almost every offensive category. Matheny was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America and the Missouri Valley Conference after hitting .336 with 77 hits and a .459 slugging percentage. In doing so he became the 4th MSU player in the last five years to be named the Conference Freshman of the year. Continue reading

2014 Illinois State Schedule Released

IllinoisStateFeaturedNORMAL, Ill. – The defending Missouri Valley Conference Champion Illinois State baseball team unveiled its 54-game 2014 baseball schedule Thursday. The schedule features four opponents who earned 2013 NCAA Tournament bids, six teams that won more than 30 games, and it includes 22 contests at Duffy Bass Field, where admission will remain free for the third-consecutive season.
