CBD Visit: CSUN Gets Pair of One-Run Victories in Doubleheader Sweep

Kyle Ferramola hit two homers.NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Kyle Ferramola, a pitcher inserted into the designated hitter role for the first time Friday to inject some power, did just that in Cal State Northridge’s 5-4 win in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Utah Valley Saturday afternoon.

In his second career start, Ferramola hit two solo home runs, including a shot that proved to be the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth after Utah Valley (9-15) had tied the game with two runs in the top half of the inning.

Northridge (9-12) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, spurred by a Houdini act by Ryan Raslowsky after he was caught in a rundown between third base and home. Raslowsky went wide avoiding Utah Valley’s tag attempt and was called safe by umpire Johnny Pineda, much to the dismay of the Wolverines’ coaches, players and fans.

The Wolverines tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but Raslowsky hit a leadoff triple in the fifth and scored on a Kyle Attl single. Ferramola hit his first collegiate home run in the sixth inning. He initially received the silent treatment from his teammates after returning to the dugout, before they erupted in celebration.

Utah Valley tied the game again in the eighth inning with the help of two walks and two passed balls, but Ferramola’s second bomb pushed the Matadors ahead for good.

In the first game, Northridge took another one-run contest, 4-3, as it held off a late rally by the Wolverines in the sixth inning of a scheduled seven inning contest. Utah Valley loaded the bases with one out and scored a pair of runs on a walk and an errant throw.

Reliever Michael Coates was brought in to put out the fire. After allowing a run on a wild pitch on his initial offering, Coates stranded the tying and go-ahead runs with an infield pop and groundout. He turned the ball over to Josh Goossen-Brown, who collected the first of his two saves on the day, with a hitless seventh inning.

CBD Photo Gallery: Sweet Swinging Pitcher Powers Northridge to 5-4 Win

Kyle Ferramola hits his first homer.NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Two weeks ago, Kyle Ferramola was a junior college transfer struggling to get any time out of the bullpen because of control issues. Having seen some power from him during a fall batting practice for pitchers, Cal State Northridge head coach Matt Curtis decided to throw him into the batting groups to see what he could do.

With other designated hitter options struggling, Ferramola worked his way into the starting lineup Friday night. He went 2 for 3 with a two-run triple and a walk. The strong performance earned him another start in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader with Utah Valley and Ferramola went off.

Josh Goossen-Brown had two hits & a save.NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — A Chester Pak two-run single in the third inning proved to be the difference as Cal State Northridge defeated Utah Valley 4-3 Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at Matador Field.

The Matadors (8-12) held a 4-0 lead until the sixth inning when starter Calvin Copping ran into trouble. Copping hit a batter, gave up a Baltimore chop single and walked a batter to load the bases. After two runs scored against reliever Oscar Sandoval, Michael Coates entered with the bases loaded.

Coates’ first pitch went to the backstop, cutting the lead to 4-3, but following a walk, Coates got a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat and keep Northridge ahead.

Josh Goossen-Brown recorded the final three outs to close it out and collect his third save. Goosen-Brown also had two hits and an RBI. He played a part in the Matadors’ first run as well. After Goossen-Brown reached on an error that kept the inning alive, Nate Ring delivered an RBI single.

In the third inning, Kyle Attl executed a hit-and-run beautifully to put runners on the corners with no outs. Miles Williams struck out, but Goossen-Brown laid down a bunt single when the pitcher slipped. Two batters later, Pak delivered a hit into right field that scored two.
