Tulane’s Rick Jones to miss rest of 2014 Season

RickJonesNEW ORLEANS – Due to an illness that has sidelined him for the last 10 games, Tulane baseball head coach Rick Jones will miss the remainder of the 2014 season under doctor’s orders, announced Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson on Monday.

Jones’ illness is not considered life-threatening, and his situation will be reevaluated at the end of the year.

“Due to Coach Jones’ continued health concerns, we believe it is in his best interest to take a break from baseball and continue his treatments at this time,” Dr. Greg Stewart said. Continue reading

Conference USA Weekend Preview

East Carolina (17-12, 6-3) @ #14 Rice (21-10, 9-3)
This matchup will feature one of the most anticipated matchups of the year as top pitching prospects Jeff Hoffman and Zech Lemond will square off on Friday night. ECU had won 7 games in a row before losing to N.C. State during the week. Rice is coming off a weekend series loss to MTSU and mid-week loss to Texas. These teams are 2nd (Rice) and 4th (ECU) in the conference in pitching so expect this to be a tight, low-scoring series. Rice is still dominating the conference despite its recent series loss, while ECU could prove a lot by picking up a couple of wins this weekend. Continue reading

The Matchup

FIU is riding high after a weekend sweep of Marshall followed by a mid-week win over South Florida. The offense leads CUSA in average at .322 and 7.7 runs per game. That offense is led by Aramis Garcia who is hitting .413 with 26 runs scored, 5 home runs and 25 RBIs. The pitching staff also leads CUSA with an ERA of 1.79. FAU (14-10, 3-6)-Rice (19-6, 8-1)
Game 1 – FAU: 0 Rice: 2. WP – Lemond LP – Gomber SV – Ditman. Rice’s Zech Lemond struck out a career-best 12 batters in 8.1 innings, while giving up 6 hits and 3 walks. Austin Gomber went 8 innings for FAU, only giving up the 2 ER. Skyler Ewing was 1-3 with an RBI for Rice.
Game 2 – FAU: 1 Rice: 14. WP – Fox LP – Strawn. Blake Fox only allowed 1 ER in 6.2 innings. Ewing was 2-4 with a double, 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Shane Hoelscher for Rice was a perfect 4-4 at the plate.
Game 3 – FAU: 2 Rice: 3 (12). WP – Ditman LP – Mizelle. Matt Ditman came on in relief for Rice in the 8th inning and would go on to pitch 5 total scoreless innings, while striking out eight. John Clay Reeves was 2-4 with a home run for Rice, and Ewing drove in a pair. Continue reading

The Matchup

FAU is coming off a weekend series win over La Tech in which both teams combined to score 14 runs in three games. They did not play a mid-week game this week so their arms should be well-rested for Rice. On offense, they’re hitting .290 in 20 games, averaging just over 5 runs a game. Rice won its opening weekend series over Old Dominion, and then during the week they beat Texas A&M Corpus Christi and #27 TCU. The offense has really come on as of late and now owns a combined batting average of .272, scoring just over 5 runs a game. UAB (13-3, 2-1)-MTSU (5-9, 1-2)

Game 1 – UAB: 3 MTSU: 4. WP – Cody Tollison LP – Cory Eller SV – Paul Mittura. MTSU starting pitcher Zac Curtis went 7.2 innings, only allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits and 3 walks, while matching a career-high with 10 strikeouts. UAB starter Chase Mallard gave up his first and second runs of the season, ending his consecutive innings scoreless streak at 26. In all, Mallard lasted 8 innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 8. MTSU first baseman Trent Miller was 1-3 with a walk and a run scored in the game. With the game tied at two apiece going to the top of the 9th, the Blue Raiders plated one run on a sac fly and another on a wild pitch, which would end up proving to be the game-winning run as UAB got one back in the bottom of the 9th. FAU is 7-1 in their last eight games and are coming off a mid-week two game sweep over Boston College. The Owls have even gained some votes in recent polls after their current hot streak. Rice Faces Touch Challenge in Houston College Classic

The Matchups
Rice is coming off a weekend sweep over Purdue followed by a mid-week loss to Sam Houston State; meanwhile, the Longhorns are coming off a series victory over Stanford, and they picked up a mid-week win over UT-Pan America. TCU picked up three wins last weekend in a tournament that included BYU, Texas A&M Corpus Christ, and UTSA, but then they dropped their mid-week game 10-2 to Texas Arlington. The Red Raiders started out the year winning three-out-four against then ranked #3 Indiana. They then went on to sweep a three-game series over Oral Roberts and picked up a mid-week win over BYU.
