Titans Beat Gorgen, and Anteaters, 12-5

, Calif.Erik Komatsu and Josh Fellhauer combined for seven hits, five RBI and six runs as No. 25 Cal State Fullerton upset No. 5 UC Irvine, 12-5, Friday night at Anteater Ballpark in Big West Conference baseball action.

A record crowd of 3,176 was on hand to see Fullerton improve to 17-9 overall and 3-1 in league action with its eighth win in nine games. Irvine fell to 19-4, 2-2 in losing to its former Head Coach Dave Serrano in the first meeting since he left UCI for CSF after a successful 3-year run.

Dirtbags Win Big West Opener at UCR

RIVERSIDE– Andrew Liebel (3-1) pitched his second complete game of the season and Jason Corder homered yet again to lead No. 9-ranked Long Beach State (18-9, 1-0 Big West) to a 6-3 victory over host UC Riverside (7-16, 1-3 Big West) in the Big West opener for the Dirtbags.

Liebel pitched a complete game 10-hitter, striking out seven and walking none as The Beach snapped a season-long six-game losing streak.

Corder’s fourth home run in five games capped a five-run fifth inning for LBSU to re-take the lead at 6-3. A Danny Espinosa single tied it at 3-3, before Corder’s three-run homer to left center doubled the lead. It was his sixth longball of the year.

Matadors Rope Mustangs in 9-7 Win Over Cal Poly

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
Northridge (11-13, 1-3) relievers P.J. Rousey and Edwin Quirarte combined to shut out Cal Poly (9-14, 1-3) over the final four innings of Friday’s Big West Conference game, and the Matadors claimed the 9-7 win. John Parham and Ryan Pineda had three hits each and Drew Muren was 4-for-4 to lead the Northridge attack.

The Matadors also played error-free baseball for just the third time in 2008.

Paul Tremlin had a rocky start and was chased after just 1.2 innings and was ultimately responsible for the first three Cal Poly scores. Ryan Juarez did a nice job to stem the Cal Poly momentum, and allowed just one run over the next 2.1 frames.

Gauchos Ninth Inning Rally Downs Pacific, 5-4.

Steve Cook’s two-RBI double in the top of the ninth inning catapulted UC Santa Barbara (20-8, 4-0) to a 5-4 come-from-behind win against division rival Pacific (5-21, 0-4) on Friday night at Klein Family Field.

The Gauchos entered the top of the ninth inning trailing 4-3. With one out, Patrick Rose’s infield single got things started. Freshman right fielder Mark Haddow walked in the ensuing at-bat, putting runners on first and second. That’s when Cook strolled to the plate and hit a 1-0 pitch from Tigers reliever Larry Holscher (1-3) into the left center field gap, scoring Rose and Haddow to put the Gauchos in front, 5-4. Zach Samuels (2-1) picked up the win pitching the final three innings of relief, slamming the door on the Tigers to secure the Gaucho victory.

Aggies Take Series-Opening Win Over Cougars

Sophomore designated hitter Kyle Mihaylo had a career game that included four extra-base hits and a game-high five RBI’s, and UC Davis used a five-run first inning to defeat Washington State, 12-5, in a nonconference baseball game at Bailey-Brayton Field Friday night.

UC Davis has won 13 of its last 14 games and five straight to improve its record to 19-8 overall. The Cougars, who were ranked nationally two weeks ago, have lost their last four games and are now 16-11. It marked the Aggies’ second straight win over Washington State and third in four meetings dating back to last season.

Waves Pound UCSB, 14-3

MALIBU, Calif. – #11 Pepperdine’s bats came alive a day after getting shut out, as the Waves used a 14-hit attack to down UC Santa Barbara 14-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

Pepperdine improved to 18-9 (1-1 WCC) with the win, while UCSB fell to 19-8.

A day after getting shut out for the first time this season, the Waves wasted no time putting runs on the board on Wednesday, scoring two runs in the first inning on two-out RBI singles from David Harris and Chase d’Arnaud to give the Waves a 2-0 lead. Continue reading

LBSU Falls Again, at Fresno State 7-6

LONG BEACH– Reliever David Roberts (2-1) gave up three runs to Fresno State (16-13) in the seventh inning as No. 9-ranked Long Beach State (17-9) dropped their sixth-straight and remained winless on their season-long 10-game road trip, losing 7-6.

Steve Tinoco’s two-run, one-out home run brought LBSU to within one in the ninth, but Brandon Burke notched the save with two groundouts to end the team’s five-game road trip through Northern California. Continue reading
