CONWAY, S.C. – A sacrifice fly from freshman Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) in the seventh broke an 9-9 tie and a home run from junior David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Southern Alamance) in the eighth gave the 20th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (15-2) a cushion in its 11-9 win over 25th-ranked Michigan (8-6) March 16. The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers exploded for six runs in the first inning off of UNC starter Matt Harvery to cruise to a 11-4 victory over the number 3 ranked Tar Heels. They took advantage of four walks, a hit by pitch, while getting a huge three run double by Chance Gilmore to take control of the game early. Rich Witten had a strong game while going 2-4 with three RBI. The top North Carolina performance in the losing effort was Kyle Seager who went 3-5 with 2 RBI. Sophomore Sheldon McDonald threw eight shutout innings of five-hit, nine-strikeout ball and did not walk a batter, as he led the Huskies to a 5-0 win over the Western Michigan Broncos on Wednesday afternoon at IMG Academies in BRadenton, Fla. Western Michigan entered the game having scored at least 15 runs in three of its last five games, but McDonald kept the Bronco bats silent all afternoon. TAMPA, Fla. – The University of South Florida baseball team fell, 5-4, Tuesday night to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at Red McEwen Field.
The Bulls’ record drops to 3-4, while the Eagles improve to 8-1.
USF’s offensive attack came in the first two innings after falling behind by two after the top of the first. Redshirt freshman Ryan Lockwood spearheaded the Bulls’ offensive charge with a lead-off walk. Junior counterparts Brandon Smith and Addison Maruszak followed with a walk and a hit by pitch to fill the bases. MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) allowed just a bunt single in the first inning while striking out nine in the Coastal Carolina University baseball team’s (8-1) 6-0 win over George Mason (1-6) March 2 in the final game of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament at BB&T Coastal Field.

Auburn, Ala. – Despite game time temperatures in the mid-40’s, Florida State (4-0) didn’t let the cold weather effect its play in the first of a four game set against Auburn as the Seminoles passed an early season test downing Auburn (4-1) 7-5 in their first road contest of the season. Senior Dennis Guinn and freshman Stuart Tapley each recorded three hits while Seminole starter Elih Villanueva worked 5.1 innings to register his second win of the season.
