MACON, Ga. – Mercer enters the 2014 Atlantic Sun Baseball season as the favorite to take the conference crown as the Bears own seven first-place votes from the league coaches and landed five student-athletes on the preseason all-conference team.
Mercer’s Chesny Young was tabbed the A-Sun Preseason Player of the Year after winning the title last year, while his teammate Michael Massi, a second basemen, was selected as the league’s top defensive player. The league coaches labeled USC Upstate’s Chad Sobotka as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Continue reading
College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!
Number 28 on our countdown is junior RHP Chad Sobotka from South Carolina-Upstate. The 6’6 righty was a four year letter winner at Riverview High School. As a senior, he went 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA with him named the team’s MVP. Continue reading

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team announced its 2014 schedule. The 55-game schedule consists of 26 home games at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium and features 15 games against teams that competed in the 2013 NCAA Regionals.
The Ospreys finished the 2013 campaign with a Division I program best 40-19 record including a 24-9 mark at home. Along with its 26 home dates, UNF will play a total of 34 games within the borders of Florida. Continue reading
We continue the countdown today with number 67, Mercer infielder Chesny Young. In his sophomore campaign with the bears, Young started every game in Mercer’s 61 game schedule. Chesny led the nation among NCAA Division I players in hits with a total of 105. In addition, Young led the Bears in batting average (.401), on-base percentage (.458), and total bases (141). The Mercer infielder also finished 2nd in RBI’s (65), finishing out the Bears schedule with a 30 game hitting streak. His success on the diamond earned him the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year. Continue reading

DeLAND–Home contests with Florida State, Miami, Ole Miss, NC State, and Boston College highlight Stetson’s 2014 baseball schedule, which head coach Pete Dunn announced on Wednesday.
The Hatters also visit South Carolina for a pair of mid-week games in early March and face a total of seven 2013 post-season squads. Stetson also is slated to play 13 games against either SEC or ACC foes, making this one of Dunn’s most challenging slates in his 35 years at the helm. Continue reading

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior RHP Buck Farmer was in complete command of East Tennessee State, but it was a nearly two hour lightning delay in the seventh inning that knocked him from the game as Georgia Tech staved off elimination Saturday at Hawkins Field with a 5-1 win over the Buccaneers in the Nashville Regional.
The second-seeded Yellow Jackets built a 5-0 lead for Farmer when the inclement weather moved in, and Jonathan Roberts fired three effective innings after the break to finish off the victory and keep his team alive. Continue reading
Starkville, Miss. – Playing in their sixth elimination game in the past eight days, the Central Arkansas Bears showed that the threat of neither elimination nor rain was enough to put them away. The fourth-seeded Bears overcame a rain delay and a comeback attempt to win their first ever NCAA tournament game, defeating the third-seeded Mercer Bears by a final score of 6-5 in eleven innings to keep their season alive for at least one more day. STARKVILLE, Miss. – Anthony Izzio scattered seven hits and allowed just one run in six innings pitched to lead the second-seeded University of South Alabama baseball team to a 9-4 win over third-seeded Mercer in the opening round of the NCAA Starkville Regional at Dudy Noble Field.
Izzio (4-0) struck out five and issued one walk to earn his fourth consecutive win in as many appearances. It also marked South Alabama’s first NCAA Regional win since 2006. Continue reading
