College Baseball Daily Top Performers (2/22)

Week two of college baseball is in the books and as the first week entertained so did the second. We were privileged to witness quite a few players emerge in big games and turn in a great weekend performance for their respective club.

A breakdown of some of the top hitting and pitching performances of the second week (2/22) of the 2015 Division 1 college baseball season are below.

ON THE BUMP:

Josh Moore of St. Louis was named the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week after the junior left-hander led the Billikens to a 2-1 victory over a very good Troy baseball team on Friday, Feb. 20. Moore threw eight innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out six. The Billikens were named the COX Diamond Invitation tournmanet champions after defeating Troy and Southern Miss before dropping a game to North Florida.

Anthony Kay of the UConn Huskies took the no decision after tossing seven innings of two-hit ball with one earned run, one walk and six strikeouts in the Huskies eleventh inning 2-1 loss to Florida Atlantic Univeristy.

Robbie Coursel of Florida Atlantic had a no-hitter until the fifth inning to set the Owls up for their 2-1 victory. The junior threw five innings allowing one hit, three walks and zero runs while striking out six on Sunday.

Alabama A&M’s Caleb Roberts tossed a complete game, three hitter as the Bulldogs defeated Marshall in Starkville, Mississippi on Sunday afternoon. Roberts allowed three hits, one earned run, one base on balls, and struck out four in 9.0 innings to bump him to 1-1 on the year.

Marist pitcher Chris Napolitano was awarded the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week award for his performance over the weekend versus the University of Virginia. Napolitano tossed 8.1 shutout innings in Marist’s 5-4, 18 inning loss to No. 1 Virginia. He allowd just five hits with three walks, and struck out four batters.

The Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week is Will Dennis of Seattle University announced Monday morning by the conference office. Dennis threw 98 pitches in 9.0 innings only allowing four hits, one earned run while striking out seven in a 1-0 loss to CSUN on Feb. 20.

Josh Sborz, Virginia: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Davis Tominaga, Portland 9 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Brent Strong, Bradley: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K

Jake Andrews, Eastern Michigan: 9 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Jack Karraker, Oregon: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K

Eddie Macaluso, Iona 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K

Luke Humphreys, Morehead State: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K

Joe Zayatz, UNC Asheville: 8 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

Is it safe to say that offense in college baseball is officially back? For the second week in a row we have multiple multi-homer games turned in around the country. This week the multi-homer club featured Gage Green (Oklahoma State), Kolbey Carpenter (Oklahoma), Brandon Soat (IPFW), Tyler Wells (Ohio), Korbin Williams (Evansville) and Matt Rose (Georgia State).

AT THE PLATE:

Trent Higginbothem of North Florida turned in an impressive performance over the weekend by going 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Higginbothem also added a double and home run and didn’t strike out at all on the weekend.

The University of South Carolina’s Alex Destino went 3-for-4 verse Northeastern over the weekend. Destino collected three RBI and plated one time while going ya-ya once in the Gamecocks three game sweep of Northeastern.

Stanford Cardinal freshman Jesse Kuet was among one of the more impressive performances over the weekend with his 4-for-5 series against Cal State Fullerton. Kuet recorded four hits, two RBI and two runs scored while hitting one home run and stealing one base in the series win (2-1).

Brandon Soat of IPFW had a weekend that anyone can tip their cap to. He went 4-for-6 with two bombs, eight RBI and six runs scored while walking once and striking out once.

Kent Rollins of Georgia Southern was 3-for-4 with six RBI and two runs scored over the weekend. Rollins is a catalyst in a dangerous Georgia Southern baseball team.

RJ Ybarra, Arizona State: 3-3, 1 R, 1 RBI

J.C. Wilhite, Alabama: 3-4, 1 R, 2 RBI,

Tyler Wells, Ohio: 3-3, 2 R, 5 RBI

Kent Rollins, Georgia Southern: 3-4, 2 R, 6 RBI,

 

CBD National Players of the Week (March 1st)
