CBD Photo Gallery: Mustangs End Sac State’s Season, 6-5

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Things pretty much went the way Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee drew them up in Sunday afternoon’s elimination game.

He said as much himself after the game.

“It kind of went the way it was scripted,” Lee said. “[Justin] Calomeni came out and gave us some quality outs. [Bryan] Granger came in, did what he needed to do to shorten the game to get to [Reed] Reilly.

“This is the fifth game of this Regional and there’s been four one-run ballgame and one two-run game. Just shows you how competitive this Regional is.”

The Mustangs scored in each of the first four innings, building a 5-1 lead and held on as Sacramento State scrapped back before falling 6-5.

CBD Photo Gallery: Routine Not So Routine for Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly and Regional winner’s bracket games just don’t seem to get along. And routine flyballs are the instigator.

For the second year in a row, a flyball that should have been a routine out changed the momentum of Cal Poly’s Regional winner’s bracket contest. Pepperdine (41-16) took advantage, scoring two runs in the seventh inning to take a 2-1 victory Saturday night at Baggett Stadium.

“That was a tough one. We let an opportunity slide by,” Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee said. “Casey [Bloomquist] has been our most consistent pitcher all year. He showed that again tonight.”

2014 San Luis Obispo Regional Day 2 Recap

Sacramento State celebrates while ASU looks on.Sacramento State 5, Arizona State 4

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sacramento State won its first NCAA Tournament game thanks to a three-run eighth inning that broke a 2-2 tie.

A wild ninth inning saw RJ Ybarra knock a towering pinch hit, two-run home run to cut the lead to 5-4. Perennial college baseball postseason program Arizona State then put the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but the Hornets cut down the tying run trying to score from third on a chopper to first base.

With closer Sutter McLoughlin unavailable, Alex Palsha stayed the course and struck out dangerous hitter Trever Allen with a high curveball to end the game.

A booted potential double play ball propelled Sacramento State’s three-run inning, putting two men in scoring position with no outs. David Del Grande put the Hornets ahead with an RBI single through the left side. Dane Fujinaka singled home another run and a bases loaded walk to Nathan Lukes later in the inning made it 5-2.

Lukes also had a two-run double that opened the scoring in the fifth inning, but Arizona State responded with a pair of runs in the next half inning on a Dalton Dinatale bases loaded bloop single.

Pepperdine 2, Cal Poly 1

Cal Poly tags out Kyle Moses.SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – For the second year in a row, a mistake on a routine flyball cost Cal Poly in the Regional winner’s bracket.

An outfield collision started a two-run rally that was just enough for Pepperdine to take a 2-1 victory over Cal Poly Saturday night.

The Mustangs (46-10) held a 1-0 lead after Mark Mathias hit a deep fly to right field to score Chris Hoo in the second inning. But in the seventh inning, Aaron Barnett’s routine flyball to left-centerfield resulted in a triple when Jordan Ellis and Zack Zehner collided and the ball bounced off Ellis’ glove toward the warning track.

Hutton Moyer followed with a double off the right field wall to drive in pinch runner Jeremy Goldenetz. Moyer came in to score the winning run two batters later when John Schuknecht couldn’t make an over-the-shoulder grab on Manny Jefferson’s two-out flare behind first base.

Aaron Brown picked up his 12th win of the season, allowing three hits and an unearned run in eight innings. Casey Bloomquist took the tough-luck loss despite giving up just one earned run in a complete game effort.

Moyer finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Pepperdine while Brian Mundell had two of Cal Poly’s three hits.

CBD Photo Gallery: No Deja Vu For Imhof in NCAA Regionals

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – It was an eerily similar situation for Matt Imhof.

Just like last year in the NCAA Regionals, he had cruised through five innings and the Mustangs held a 4-0 lead. But last year, that’s when everything fell apart and Cal Poly’s season unraveled.

UCLA broke up a no hitter Imhof was working on and scored four runs with the help of a flyball lost in the lights. The Mustangs never recovered, falling 6-4 and losing the next day in an elimination game to end their season.

Imhof had allowed only one hit through five innings in Cal Poly’s Regional opener against Sacramento State. He said someone mentioned the similarities after the game, but it never occurred to him during the game.

2014 San Luis Obispo Regional Day 1 Recap

Corey Miller pitches.Pepperdine 3, Arizona State 2

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Arizona State couldn’t recover from an early 3-0 deficit after ace Brett Lilek left 15 pitches into his start after injuring his sternum.

The Pepperdine Waves scored a run off Lilek and two off Seth Martinez before he settled into a groove  and held on for a 3-2 victory in the opening game of the San Luis Obispo Regional Friday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.

Austin Davidson’s two-run double in the second inning put the Waves ahead 3-0 and that proved to be enough.

Arizona State got a homer from Trever Allen in the second inning and an RBI single from Nathaniel Causey in the fourth inning, but could get nothing else off Corey Miller (7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) and the combined relief efforts of Chandler Blanchard and Eric Karch.

Seth Martinez allowed three hits and two earned runs in 6.1 innings of strong relief that included him sitting down 16 straight at one point.

Cal Poly 4, Sacramento State 2

Cal Poly tags out Kyle Moses.SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly jumped on Sacramento State freshman starter Sam Long for four runs in the first four innings and cruised to a 4-2 victory in the opening round of the San Luis Obispo Regional.
The Mustangs (46-10) scored singled runs in the second and third innings and two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead and the combination of Matt Imhof (7.2 IP, 3 H, ER) and Reed Reilly did the rest Friday night at Baggett Stadium.

Sacramento State (39-23) got on the board with two runs in the eighth inning, but could have done much more damage after loading the bases with no outs. But the Hornets grounded into a double play the drastically diminished the threat level.

No. 9 hitter John Schucknecht led the way for Cal Poly going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI triple. Mark Mathias was 2-for-4 and drove in Schucknecht twice.

The Hornets managed only three hits in the game with two of those via No. 9 hitter Scott Loper.

2014 Corvallis Regional: Day 1 Recap

UC-Irvine 10 UNLV 3

CORVALLIS, Ore. — UC Irvine exploded for five runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat UNLV, 10-3, in the opening game of the NCAA Corvallis Regional at Goss Stadium Friday afternoon.

“It’s win number one in a regional, so we’re fired up to get that win,” said head coach Mike Gillespie. “It was a combination, as everyone in this room saw, of some big hits and a lot of opportunities. All coaches and all teams take the pledge to just give people three outs per inning, and there were a few free-bees this game, and we were able to capitalize on a few of them.”
