We have come across a few links from around the country which feature some interesting college baseball news and notes. The first article comes from Baseball America who looks at the movers and shakers who have changed their draft stock in a positive or negative way through the first couple of weeks of the season. The Tufts Daily looks at the 2009 Tufts baseball team who is looking to win the NESCAC but have Trinity College (CT) blocking their way to the championship. The Sun in Hamburg NY has a profile on University at Buffalo head coach Charlie Karstedt who is starting to turn around the program in the competitive MAC. The official Xavier athletic site has a profile on Zac Richard whose intimidating presence at the plate and on the mound. The next link of the day comes from Division 3 school Lynchburg College where Jeff Taylor broke the school record for stolen bases in only his second season. Baseball America writer Kirk Kenney has an excellent article about Stephen Strasburg. He is expected to be the first pick in the 2009 MLB Draft after a tremendous summer with the USA Collegiate National Team and the USA Olympic squad. Strasburg is picking up preseason accolades for all major college baseball publications with us naming him the best college player for the 2009 season. Baseball America has put together previews of Division 2 and Division 3. They have Tampa as the best team in the country for Division 2. The Spartans are seeking their third title in the last four years. UC San Diego is listed as the second best team while Mount Olive who was the 2008 Division 2 champion are ranked third by Baseball America. Central Missouri and Florida Southern round out the Top 5. Baseball America has put Robbie Shields of Florida Southern as the top position player while Mike Adams of Franklin Pierce is the top pitcher. Continue reading
Baseball America writer Aaron Fitt has put out his 2009 NCAA Tournament Projections. He has Texas A&M as the top overall seed. The rest of the top eight seeds are North Carolina at number 2, LSU at number 3, Cal State Fullerton at number 4, Rice at number 5, Texas at number 6, Ole Miss at number 7, and UCLA at number 8. The other number 1 seeds to host are Baylor, Georgia, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Arizona State, and UC-Irvine. The only number 1 seed that isn’t hosting according to Fitt is San Diego who needs to head to Louisville. Continue reading
Baseball America has put out their Preseason Top 25 which is led by the Texas A&M Aggies. They are coming off a 46-19 season which ended with a Super Regional appearance where they were swept by Rice. The Louisiana State Tigers come in at the number 2 spot after making the College World Series last season. North Carolina comes in at number 3 after another appearance in Omaha. Texas and Cal-State Fullerton round out the Top 25. Continue reading
West Virginia’s Greg Van Zant recently made a proposal to the NCAA about changing the RPI to make it more reasonable for Northern schools. The main point in his proposal was that 60 percent of games are won by the home team. This gives the Northern schools who have to start the first three weeks of the season on the road a disadvantage in the RPI. It is the primary factor in figuring out who is going to be the at-large selections for the NCAA Tournament. Continue reading
Baseball America announced that Mike Minor of Vanderbilt was named the Summer POY. Minor had a tremendous summer with the USA Collegiate National Team with two victories over the Cuban Olympic Team at the Haarlem Baseball Week in Holland. Minor started five games with the team this summer accumulating a 3-0 record with a 0.64 ERA. Continue reading
