Justin Blood and Sean Newcomb turning around Hartford Program

In three years, Sean Newcomb has done a lot for the Hartford baseball program.

His pitching perfection started earlier this season with a 0.00 ERA through his first six starts. This has brought on intense media attention while having MLB scouts to campus to the Hawks’ (18-14 overall, 6-2 America East) games, giving the program a boost in attention and his teammates who had not yet reached scouts’ radars a chance to grab their eye. NCBWA LogoMORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending March 23 today. William & Mary junior infielder Michael Katz was named National Hitter of the Week, while Stony Brook’s senior right-handed pitcher Frankie Vanderka was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season. Continue reading

Matadors WALK Away Victorious

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — “A win is a win…I’ll leave it at that. A win is a win.”

That’s how Cal State Northridge first-year head coach Greg Moore summed up the Matadors’ 1-0 victory over Stony Brook. The Wednesday afternoon affair at Matador Field featured only eight combined hits and a walk-off walk.

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!

Number 6 on the countdown is Hartford junior LHP Sean Newcomb. The Middleboro, Massachusetts native attended Middleboro High School where he went 9-0 with a 0.46 ERA and three saves as a senior in 58 innings pitched. Continue reading

2014 America East Preseason Coaches Poll

BinghamtonSlidingCAMBRIDGE, Mass. — For the first time in America East baseball history, two teams were selected as co-preseason favorites as Binghamton University and Stony Brook University tied atop the 2014 preseason coaches’ poll. Lowell Spinners to host America East Tourney through 2017 Season

LOWELL, Mass. – The America East Conference, the Lowell Spinners and the University of Massachusetts Lowell announced today that LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass., will host the America East Baseball Championship for the next four years from 2014-2017. Albany releases 2014 Schedule

AlbanyBaseball.jpgALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany baseball program has announced its 2014 season schedule, which will feature 56 games including a four-game series at Hawaii, and 18 home contests. Head Coach Jon Mueller will lead the Great Danes in his 15th season at the helm.

For the second straight year, the Great Danes will open up in Cary, N.C. at the USA Baseball Complex, Feb. 14-16. There, UAlbany will take on Canisius, St. Joseph’s, Butler, and Monmouth. Continue reading

Maine releases 2014 Schedule

EricWhiteMaine2ORONO, Maine– Series with the University of Miami and Clemson University highlight a competitive non-conference University of Maine baseball schedule, released recently. Following the series with Clemson, Maine plays 15 games in Florida before returning north for the always challenging America East Conference slate.

“The 2014 schedule is set up for us to be challenged early physically and mentally to prepare us for our America East conference games as we come back to the northeast,” said Maine head coach Steve Trimper. Continue reading

Top 100 Countdown: 76. Mike Urbanski (Binghamton)

Mike_UrbanskiWe continue the countdown today with number 76, Binghamton pitcher Mike Urbanski. In his sophomore season with the Bearcats, Urbanski made 16 relief appearances and finished with a 2-1 record. In 19 innings, the 6’4” right- hander gave up only 17 hits and struck out 16 batters, while posting a 4.74 ERA. The 2013 Bearcats staff was far from perfect but did show signs of promise down the stretch as they won the America East Conference Tournament. Urbanski led the team in appearances and his .243 batting average against was good for 5th on the staff. Continue reading
