DURHAM, N.C. — USA Baseball announced the semifinalists for the 2015 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award on Friday. Twenty-one athletes from around the country were named semifinalists for the 38th Golden Spikes Award, sponsored by Major League Baseball and presented in partnership with the Rod Dedeaux Foundation to the top amateur baseball player in the U.S.

The Tigers just handed the Seminoles their first home sweep in quiet some time and are in a position to weasel their way into the NCAA tournament, pending a good showing in Durham. One of the biggest stories from this past weekend was the play of the Boston College Eagles. They entered the weekend with a .500 record at 18-18 while being 6-11 in ACC play. The expectation this weekend was that the 24th ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets would come in and beat up on the Eagles who were missing their top offensive bat Chris Shaw and a weekend arm in Jeff Burke. Boston College sophomore RHP Mike King pitched a complete game shutout on Friday to improve the Eagles record to 19-18 and 7-11 in the highly competitive ACC.

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – The Boston College baseball team raised almost $12,000 for the Pete Frates No. 3 Fund through the online auction of the jerseys worn in the Red Sox exhibition game on March 3, 2015. The Eagles wore specially-designed jerseys to honor former captain and director of baseball operations Pete Frates. The jerseys were replicas of the one worn by Frates in 2007, during his senior captaincy. All the players donned Frates’ last name and number 3 in his honor. On Friday night in Coral Gables the College Baseball Daily Preseason Comeback Player of the Year pick, David Thompson walked it off in heroic fashion when he hit a leadoff home run over the left-field wall in the 10th inning that ended a thrilling ACC home opener and gave Miami the win, 3-2.
