Kallunki, Rhymes, Zunino Tabbed as Finalists for 2012 Dick Howser Trophy


DALLAS – Three first team All-Americans, including two standouts who have led their respective teams to this week’s NCAA Super Regionals, have been named as finalists for the 2012 Dick Howser Trophy presented by Easton Foundations. Balloting was conducted by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in conjunction with the College Baseball Foundation, the Dick Howser Trophy committee and the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce. Charlottesville Regional; Championship Monday Recap

Game One Recap

Appalachian State chased Damien Magnifico after just 2 1/3 and jumped out to a three run lead on the Oklahoma Sooners. But the lead was short lived as the Sooners retaliated with 11 consecutive runs en route to a 14-6 win over the Mountaineers. The win forced a second and final game in the championship round of the Charlottesville Regional. Continue reading


2012 Super Regional Hosts Announced

INDIANAPOLIS—The eight super-regional hosts were announced today by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

A minimum of 45 hours of super-regional television will be provided by family of ESPN channels, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. Consult local listings for specific games shown in each area of the country. As many as 15 national broadcast windows could appear on the three ESPN networks from June 8-11. Continue reading


Game Five – Charlottesville Regional (Oklahoma 5, Virginia 4)

Second baseman Jack Mayfield’s bases loaded, 3-RBI triple in the bottom of the fourth inning gave Oklahoma (40-23) a four-run lead and the Sooners held on for a 5-4 win. For the second time in three seasons the Oklahoma Sooners eliminate the Virginia Cavaliers (39-19-1) from NCAA post season play.

“I was fortunate to have three runners on base and I just squared up and luckily we found a hole. I was just running hard and made it to third base and just helped my team out any way I could,” Mayfield said. Continue reading


Charlottesville Regional: Game 4 Recap (Appalachian State 6, Virginia 5)

Virginia (39-18-1) gave Appalachian State (41-16) a six-run cushion then clawed its way back but fell a run short as the Hoos fall out of the winners bracket with their 6-5 loss to the Mountaineers. With the win Appalachian moved to 11-2 in one-run games this season and have won eight-straight games decided by just one run. The Cavaliers now need to win three consecutive games to advance to their fourth consecutive NCAA Super Regional. Coach Chris Pollard and his Mountaineers will try and clinch a regional title Monday at 4:00 PM. Continue reading
