College Baseball Hall of Fame Releases Latest Pitcher of the Year Watch List

National Pitcher of the Year

LUBBOCK, Texas —The College Baseball Hall of Fame announced Friday the 25 pitchers on the newest edition of the Pitcher of the Year Award Watch List.

The winner of the Pitcher of the Year Award, sponsored by Diamond Sports, will be announced on June 30 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the annual College Baseball Night of Champions. The event features the presentation of numerous awards and the induction ceremony for this year’s Hall of Fame class.

“The pitchers on this list continue to demonstrate excellence on the mound,” said award co-chair Landon Holly. “As we’ve progressed through the season, we’ve been able to narrow down the list, but we’ve also added some players who’ve excelled in the second half of the regular season.”

NCBWA releases National Players of the Week

FROM NCBWA RELEASEMORGANTOWN, W.Va – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA)­ released its National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 13, today. FIU senior outfielder Pablo Bermudez was named National Hitter of the Week, while Texas A&M senior right-hander Ross Stripling was named National Pitcher of the Week. 2012 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award Watch List

LUBBOCK, Texas — Five players from the Southeastern Conference are featured on the initial watch list for the 2012 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.

The award, named for the Washington State star who achieved success as both a first baseman and a right-handed pitcher, will be presented as part of the annual College Baseball Night of Champions on June 30 in Lubbock, Texas. Purdue’s Wittgren and Plawecki looking to lead Boilermakers to NCAA Tourney

This year’s Boilermakers are off to an impressive start to the season, with a record of 12-1 so far, and are ranked in Baseball America’s Top 25 for the first time since 2001. This past weekend, Purdue had a 22-1 win over Murray State, breaking the school record with 30 hits in the game.

USA Baseball Releases 2012 Preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List

(DURHAM, N.C.) — USA Baseball announced its preseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List Thursday, marking the organization’s first step toward identifying the top amateur baseball player in the country. Sponsored by Major League Baseball, the Golden Spikes Award will be presented in 2012 for the 35th time.

Texas LHP Sam Stafford Out for the Season

Per reports from Hookem.com’s Alan Trubow, Texas RHP Sam Stafford could miss the 2012 season due to a shoulder injury. Stafford, a second round pick in the 2011 draft by the New York Yankees, returned to Austin after the Yankees had questions about the same shoulder that is reportedly injured. College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We conclude the countdown today at number 1 with Stanford RHP Mark Appel. The San Ramon, California native attended Monte Vista High School. He was a two year letterwinner where as a senior he appeared in nine games with an ERA of 0.90 ERA in 31.0 innings. He gave up just 21 hits, striking out 45 and walking just six over five starts while going 4-0 with three saves. He was picked in the 15th round by the Detroit Tigers but decided to head to Stanford. Top 100 Countdown: 2. Mike Zunino (Florida)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2012 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the countdown today at number 2 with Florida junior catcher Mike Zunino. The 6’2 220 pound backstop from Cape Coral, Florida attended Mariner High School playing under Steve Larsen. As a senior, he hit .464 with 43 hits, 37 RBI, 12 home runs and nine doubles while leading the team to the district title.
