CBD Journal with Drew Fann (May 11th)

With final exams behind us, we headed to Lexington last weekend for a match up against the Kentucky Wildcats. We lost 2-0 on Friday, but quickly responded to win 10-3 on Saturday and 6-3 on Sunday. Last week I wrote that Alex Meyer is one of the best pitchers in the country and he definitely pitched like it on Friday, throwing a complete game shutout. Sonny Gray was saddled with the loss, which is a shame because he also threw a complete game in one of his best outings of the year. Continue reading CBD Journal with Drew Fann (May 11th)

Well it’ that time of the year again for our team. Its time for the second season. This is the season that we have prepared for day in and day out since the fall. This is the time that you dream of the stakes are raised and everything you do matters. Playoff baseball, there is nothing like it and we have the opportunity to play Chestnut Hill College at home for our schools first ever playoff game we have hosted. The Leathernecks kept the train rolling in the right direction and won three of four to take its second consecutive series this past weekend, a feat that has not been done since 2008. Finals week is always a challenging and interesting time for student-athletes. Balancing practices, workouts and final exams is something that requires immense focus and organization. I commend all student-athletes for the skills shown on and off the field. Continue reading CBD Journal with Western Illinois (May 10th)

One topic that hasn’t been discussed yet is hitting/pitching introduction songs that are played as we step to the plate or head to the mound. Choosing a song is no quick task—hours, maybe even days, are wasted (literally) researching and deciding on the right song or beat. Our songs are one way for our fans to identify us. People who have their head turned may hear Jay-Z’s “A Star is Born” and realize that Joe Loftus is about to hit. So even though we probably spend way too much time figuring out a song that is played for fifteen seconds, it still means something to us. Continue reading CBD Journal with Drew Fann (May 3rd)

This season has never really caught a rhythm with all of the rainouts and cancellations of games but we are right at the finish line of the regular season. It seems as a short while ago I was writing about our indoor practices and a season full of optimism. Good thing for us we have had a pretty successful year on the diamond and it makes you not want to stop playing for a very long time. We have one game left in the regular season versus a very good UMass-Lowell team who we played earlier in the week and lost on a dramatic walk off homerun. Due to the facilities at Southern Utah I was able to be in the dugout instead of a press box. It was an interesting perspective to say the least. It was an important series just like every other Summit League series. The Leathernecks played extremely well and everybody contributed on some level. The Purple & Gold outscored the Thunderbirds 44-17 and ended two of the games early in seven innings. Dating back to last season, Western Illinois has ended three out of the last four games against Southern Utah early. Continue reading CBD Journal with Western Illinois (May 3rd)

We played really well last weekend, winning all three of our games against LSU. Our offense really stepped up, scoring double-digit runs in each of the three games. Conrad Gregor was named SEC co-Freshman of the Week after going 8-for-13 with six RBIs. Mike Yastrzemski also had a great weekend at the plate while playing in front of his grandfather, Carl, who came to Nashville for the weekend. I think he used to play baseball, too. With four SEC series remaining, we are tied for the conference lead at 14-4 with South Carolina and Florida. Continue reading CBD Journal with Drew Fann (April 26th)

The frustrating season has continued for us Leathernecks. After a series split with Summit League powerhouse Oral Roberts, we traveled to Oakland University and lost three of four. Inconsistency and lack of intensity throughout a full nine innings of play seems to be our Achilles heel. If we are going to pull this season around we need to take every aspect of the game head on, and take them one step at a time. That means we need to play each and every game from here on out one pitch at a time, one out at a time, and one inning at a time. If we cannot do that then our frustrations are destined to continue. We went 2-2 last week, starting with a close midweek 1-0 win at Middle Tennessee State. T.J. Pecoraro had another strong start for us, and we were able to scratch across a run for him. We then traveled to Columbia for our series with South Carolina, where they won two of the three games. USC is a very good baseball team, and is even better playing at home behind about 10,000 fans each night. We were on the wrong end of a 3-1 pitcher’s duel Friday night, won 6-4 Saturday night thanks to Tony Kemp’s 5-for-5 hitting performance and lost 5-3 on Sunday. Jason Esposito hit three home runs this weekend to push his total to five on the year. We ended the first half of the SEC schedule 11-4 in the conference, one game behind South Carolina for the SEC East lead. Continue reading CBD Journal with Drew Fann (April 19th)
