Anthony Rendon prepares for 2011 MLB Draft

2011 National Pitcher of the Year Watch List

The College Baseball Hall of Fame announced today the quarterfinalists for the 2011 Pitcher of the Year Award. The list features 25 of the nation’s finest Division I pitchers.

2011 John Olerud Award Watch List

The College Baseball Hall of Fame announced today the names of 25 players from across the country featured on the watch list for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.

The Olerud Award, which recognizes a player who makes an impact both on the mound and at the plate, will be presented in Lubbock, Texas, on July 3 as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions. Continue reading

TCU’s Matt Purke Injured

TCU’s Matt Purke has been shutdown for the time being with a shoulder injury as he visited famed orthopedist James Andrew this week. Purke’s velocity all season has been way down barely touching 90 MPH in some of his starts. Last season, he had an outstanding freshman season which saw him go 16-0 with a 3.02 ERA while bringing the Horned Frogs to the school’s first CWS appearance. CBD had Matt Purke rated as the second best college player coming into the 2011 season. Continue reading

Coming into the season, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Matt Purke was the top draft eligible left-handed pitcher for the 2011 MLB Draft. Things have definitely changed over the first five weeks of the season. USD Tournament Scouting Report and Review

I was able to attend four games this weekend at the USD Tournament, held at Tony Gwynn Stadium at San Diego State.  I got to see Oklahoma, Cal, UCONN, and San Diego State all in action twice.  Here’s some news and notes on some key players from each team, including George Springer, Matt Barnes, Garrett Buechele, Tony Renda, Brandon Meredith, Brad Haynal, and more, with video included. Top 100 Countdown: 1. Anthony Rendon (Rice)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country.

We conclude our countdown today with junior third baseman Anthony Rendon from Rice. He is from Houston TX and attended Lamar High School. His senior season saw him hit .570 with eight homers, 17 doubles, 56 RBI, 56 runs scored and 13 steals. He picked up several honors including First team 5A all-state shortstop, All-Greater Houston selection by the Houston Chronicle, and a starter in the Texas high school all-star game. He was also named all-state as a junior when he led the Houston area with 14 homers. Continue reading

Top 100 Countdown: 2. Matt Purke (TCU)

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today at number 2 in our countdown with TCU sophomore LHP Matt Purke. The Spring, Texas native attended Klein High School where he had solid career. As a junior in high school, he went 12-1 with a 0.37 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings pitched. He was named the high school pitcher of the year after his junior season by Baseball America. They also rated him as the third best high prospect in the 2009 MLB Draft. The Texas Rangers ended up selecting him in the first round with the 14th overall pick but were not able to come to terms with him. Continue reading

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown for the 2010 College Baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be providing one player per day until we reach number 1.

We continue the list today at number 3 in our countdown with UConn junior centerfielder George Springer. The New Britain, Connecticut, native attended Avon Old Farms all four years of high school. He had an outstanding career being named All-New England in 2007 and 2008 while participating in the Cape Cod High School Classic in 2007. The Minnesota Twins selected him in the 2008 MLB Draft but were unable to sign him. Continue reading
